Many people in Karnataka go in search of beautiful places for trips outside India with being unaware of the hidden treasures in our very own State. Some tourist places in Karnataka are very similar to the other places of country as well as foreign tourist spots. Take for an example, Kodagu District, which is called as Scotland of India, while Gokak Falls is popularly known as Niagara of the State as it bears similarity to Niagara falls situated in the United States of America.
Gokak falls is located in Belagavi District, and is just 10 kilometres away from the Gokak town. The water falls from the height of about 170 feet here. The River Ghataprabha after winding a course of a long route takes a leap of 52 metres over a rocky bed 170 feet down. The falls is famous for its spread and shape. Except in width and colour of the water, the general features of the fall, its height, shape and rapidity are much like those of ” Niagara”.
The waterfall is horse shoe shaped at the crest with a flood breadth of 177 metres (580 ft). During rainy season the thick reddish brown water sweeps far over the brink of the cliff with a dull roar that can be heard from some distance.
Gokak gets its name due to the Goki trees found in abundance in these areas. The proud aspect for the Kannadigas is that the electricity was generated for the first time in the country in 1887 here. The generating station can be reached on the ropeway. Recommended only for the extra courageous! A walk down either banks of the rocky gorge rewards you with ancient Chalukyan monuments waiting to be explored.
Gokak is also famous for Karadantu, the sweet dish made using dry fruits. It has a legacy that dates back to centuries. No one can leave Gokak without buying Karadantu.
Belagavi Fort, Kittur Fort, Hidkal Dam, Jamboti, Godachinamalki Falls are some of the places nearby that can one visit during his/her Gokak trip. July to January is the best time to visit this falls.
