“Sir, I want to score well in the exam! I am feeling anxious! I sometimes go blank! I am stressed! I sometimes get some shivering too. But I am working hard! I am reducing my sleep further so that I can study more! I sit for at least 7 – 8 hours in the night apart from studies during the day. I want to be the topper”
The client who had come for consultation was sharing all these and I was listening to him very carefully! I could see a very strong aspiration in him! But at the same time wrong practice as well.
Not just him, but so many students get into this notion that by reducing or sacrificing sleep, they can become extra-ordinary! A lot of people also think that sleeping is a ‘waste of time’; “the lesser you sleep the more successful you would be” and many more!
Most of us don’t realize that sleep is one of the important aspects to keep up our mental health. Poor quality of sleep results in irritability, frustration, anger, lack of concentration, sadness, mood swings, anxiety, tiredness, and so on! These are all if continued for a longer period, can impact your mental health for sure!
It is also important to note that by sleeping, you are rejuvenating yourself and not just wasting time! It will help you in increasing your efficiency! Hypothetically saying, studying for 5 hours along with the strain and burden of sleep deprivation could be as efficient as two and half hours to three hours of effective studying with a fresh mind after a good quality of sleep.
As you might have already observed, the emphasis is on quality of sleep and not quantity! People have a perception that one must sleep for 8 hours to stay healthy! But in my experience, it is quite individualistic! Somebody may feel sufficed with 5 hours of sleep, for some others, it could be 7 hours! There are some people, who are fine with just 3 hours of sleep as well. However, too long hours of sleeping is also not good. It will make you more lethargic and that will also create other issues both for physical and mental health.
Therefore, the better quality of sleep you get, the better would be your mental health as well as physical health.
