Mangaluru: Today, Hindus across the globe celebrate Vijayadashami, also known as Dussehra, a festival that signifies the triumph of good over evil. Falling on Shukla Paksha Dashmi during the month of Ashwin as per the Hindu lunar calendar, Vijayadashami arrives a day after Maha Navami, marking the culmination of Shardiya Navratri.

Historical and Mythological Significance:

Vijayadashami holds immense historical and mythological significance in Hindu culture. According to one legend, Lord Rama, the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu, defeated the demon king of Lanka, Ravana, on this day, symbolizing the victory of righteousness over wickedness. Another celebrated mythological event associated with Vijayadashami is the victory of Goddess Durga over the formidable demon Mahishasura after a fierce nine-day battle.

Initiating Diwali Celebrations:

Apart from its symbolic triumph of good over evil, Vijayadashami also marks the commencement of Diwali festivities, occurring twenty days before the Festival of Lights. This period is particularly significant as it commemorates the return of Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Lord Lakshman to Ayodhya after their triumphant victory over Ravana.

Traditions and Rituals:

In various parts of India, devotees observe specific rituals on Vijayadashami. Worshipping the Shami tree holds great importance in some regions, inspired by the belief that Arjuna concealed his weapons inside a Shami tree during his exile period. Additionally, in North India and several other parts of the country, Dussehra is celebrated with fervor. Effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhkaran, and the valiant warrior son Meghnad are burnt, signifying the destruction of evil forces. Ramlila, a theatrical enactment of Lord Rama’s story, is performed throughout the nine days of Navratri, culminating in the symbolic slaying of Ravana on the tenth day.

The symbolism of Dussehra:

Beyond the festivities, Dussehra conveys profound symbolism. The ten heads of Ravana are often interpreted as representing ten negative qualities, and the day’s significance lies in overcoming these undesirable traits. It is a reminder of the eternal battle between virtue and vice, light and darkness, urging individuals to embrace goodness and dispel darkness from their lives.

As families gather, prayers are offered for prosperity and good health, and communities come together to celebrate the victory of virtue, Dussehra stands as a beacon of hope, unity, and righteousness in the hearts of millions.
