Mangaluru: The cases of attack on foreign nationals have been on rise and it has become a common scene that some foreign nationals are looked at with suspicion. In such a situation, a Malaysian national living in Mangaluru may be pushed to trouble after a leading Kannada daily published an article on January 30.
The article talks of how a Malaysian living in Mangaluru has got an Aadhaar card done for himself and how the security of the nation is at stake with such happenings.
However, the Aadhaar rules states that any person (irrespective of his nationality) living in India is eligible to get Aadhaar done for the simple reason that the card is only a unique identity document and not a proof of citizenship.
The report stated that Huh Jiyan Meng (25) who has come to Mangaluru on a study visa for pursuing medicine has managed to get an Aadhar card in his name furnishing fake certificates.
The report states that the student has been involved in anti-national activities by getting an Aadhar by claiming himself to be a citizen of India and that government officials and local representatives had help him get an Aadhaar.
The article done reportedly after receiving a complaint from a Hampankatta resident that a Malaysian living in his flat has an Aadhaar card, goes on to state that the student will face imprisonment for giving false information about his identity to get an Aadhar card.
Assistant Deputy Commissioner Kumar speaking to newskarnataka said, “if a person needs an Aadhar card, he has to provide residential proof or the current address proof and he should be residing here for a a minimum of 182 days. As per act, like how we issue pan card for anyone paying tax irrespective of belonging to any country, here in this case the student has provided address proof hence his name has been enrolled for Aadhar card. Prima facie he is not at fault. But we have written to authority concerned and we will verify all his documents and records and take appropriate action if found guilty of furnishing fake documents.”
