Bommanahalli: BJP MLA is set to romp home again

Bommanahalli is one of the areas in Bengaluru where residents pray the rain god not to bless their respective areas with bountiful rain during monsoon. Many low-lying areas in this Assembly constituency get inundated whenever a heavy rain lashes Bengaluru.

Recently, the residents of Koramangala 4th Block and Bommanahalli had spent sleepless nights when rain water entered their homes two weeks ago. They blame the authorities and elected representatives did nothing to mitigate rain-related woes despite repeated complaints.

“We know finding a solution to this problem is not possible immediately. We know it needs time but what is lacking is the commitment and dedication among the authorities concerned to find a permanent solution,’’ said Raja Reddy S, a resident of HSR Layout.

The constituency is a mix of high income and low-income families, with high rises, independent villas and low-income housing. It hogged the limelight when thousands of garment factories turn violent and brought the traffic on the busy Hosur Road to a standstill and even burnt a police station against the norm on withdrawal of provident fund.

However, many residents are happy with the present incumbent Satish Reddy M of BJP who got elected from Bommanahalli to the State Assembly twice and is expected to contest again in the next Assembly elections.

“We have no problems with MLA Satish Reddy. He has been proactive all these years. He will tour the constituency to know the problems and fix them on a regular basis,’’ Giri Gowda N, a resident of Bommanahalli said.

The residents said the MLA has the reputation for being very approachable, irrespective of the constituents’ social or economic background. Satish Reddy was instrumental in starting the Jana Spandanaprogramme where he met the local RWA representatives along with civic authorities and heard grievances.

“Our MLA helps poor and needy. He has organised transport for people who want to visit Melamaravathur temple in Tamil Nadu,’’ said Raja Manikyam, a resident of Yelachanahalli.

There are 3,66,338 voters in Bommanahalli and the number of voters is expected to be more before the State Assembly elections scheduled to be held in April or May, 2018. Among the existing voters, 1,98,917 are male voters while 1,67350 are women voters and 71 are others.

Satish Reddy contested on BJP ticket in 2008 and defeated his nearest rival Kupendra Reddy D of Congress by a margin of 13,640 votes. While Satish Reddy got 62,993 votes, Congress candidate, a well-known real estate developer, has managed to get 49,353 votes.

In 2013, Satish Reddy, who contested again as a BJP candidate, not only got more votes but also increased the margin of votes against his nearest rival Nagabhushana C of Congress. Reddy defeated Nagabhushana with a margin of 25,852 votes. The BJP candidate got 86,552 votes while Congress candidate, who is also a real estate developer, has polled 60,700 votes.

Bommanahalli Assembly segment has eight BBMP wards. Among the eight corporators, seven belong to BJP while one is from Congress who got elected from Mangammanapalya ward. BJP corporators represent wards such as Bommanahalli, HSR Layout, Jaraganahalli, Puttenahalli, Bilekahalli, Hongasandra, and Arakere in the BBMP Council.

Unless Congress finds a potential and popular candidate to contest in the next Assembly elections, none can stop BJP candidate Satish Reddy achieving a hat-trick by romping home with a huge majority in 2018.
