Director, Champa Shetty

A popular dubbing artist in the Sandalwood film industry, Champa has also won the state award for dubbing in 2007-2008. In an exclusive interview with NewsKarnataka.com, Champa speaks about her debut as a director:

The film is based on three short stories

The film “Ammachchi Yemba Nenapu” is based on three short stories written by Vydehi- Ammachi Yemba Nenapu, Akku, and Puttammatte Mattu Mommagalu. Champa, who is basically a theatre artist and director, did a drama based on these three stories. “After the drama got a good response I felt that this story would be apt for the big screen as well. I have a habit of reading novels since a young age. After I became a theatre director, I would visualize the story whenever I read a novel. Not all novels or short stories can be made into films, however, a few have that possibility. In this way, the script of “Ammachchi Yemba Nenapu” was prepared, Champa said and added that Vydehi had also written the dialogues for the film.

About “Ammachchi Yemba Nenapu”

The film follows the stories of three women from three different generations. The first story is about a teenaged girl named Ammachchi. The second story is about Akku, a middle-aged mentally unstable woman, and the third story is about a widowed old woman. All the stories are inter-linked and is based in the 1980s in Kundapur.

The film tries to depict the sufferings of a girl of those days, and whether or not the three women in the film overcome their hardships is the main plot of the film. The film has been jointly produced by Prakash P Shetty, Geeta Surathkal, Vandana Inaamdaar, Gowramma and Kalakadamba Art Centre, all of whom are into theatre. They have produced this film with their hard earned money as they are passionate about making a good film.

Raj B Shetty as the villain

“I loved Raj Shetty’s performance in ‘Ondu Motteya Kathe’. He had underplayed his role in the film and I saw a great performer in him. A great performer can play any role, whether it is a positive or a negative one. I felt that he was perfect for the negative role in our film and approached him with the belief that he would agree to take up the role,” said Champa adding that Raj agreed to play the role after reading the short stories. She then praised Raj saying that he performed his role excellently. “I can proudly say that no one else could have played the role the way has done it,” she added.

Film’s release date

The film has been certified and will be releasing in theatres on November 1 on the occasion of Kannada Rajyostava.
