Mangaluru: Ramadan, often called Ramzan, is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and the holy month of fasting (roza). It occurs annually and is based on the appearance of the new moon.
The month commemorates the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad according to Islamic belief. This annual period is considered to be one of the Five Pillars of Islam (the five basic tenets of the Muslim religion). For Muslims Ramadan is a period of introspection, communal prayer in the mosque, and reading of the Quran and according to their belief, God forgives the past sins of those who observe the holy month with fasting, prayer, and faithful intention. Pregnant or nursing women, younger children, the aged, the weak, travelers on long journeys, and the mentally ill are exempt from fasting during the month.
During this period, the believers are expected to refrain from food, drink, sexual activity, and all forms of immoral behaviour, including impure or unkind thoughts, between dawn and dusk.
At this time, Muslims gather in their homes or mosques to break their fast with a meal called iftar, after the sunset prayer. The meal is usually shared with friends and family. The iftar usually begins with dates or apricots and water or sweetened milk.
A traditional iftar menu can include dishes such as kebabs, haleem, biryani, paya, halwa, sheer khurma and phirni, and Town Tables in Attavara, Mangalore has it all and more, including special desserts such as Malpuas and Jelebis, decadent dishes such as Mutton and Chicken Baida Rotis and Rolls.
During this holy month of Ramzan, we suggest you break your fast at Town Tables because we have tried it out.
