Mangaluru: “Why does the district administration allow organising private programmes in the heart of the city? I was stranded in a bus stand for nearly an hour waiting for the bus. District administration should not give permission for such programmes in future”, says Supriya, who was forced to walk nearly 4 km to reach her office on Saturday, January 19.

The silver jubilee programme organised at Nehru Maidan to mark M N Rajendra Kumar’s completion of 25 years as the president of SCDCC Bank on Saturday, witnessed about 1.5 lakh crowd. However, a widespread discussion has been going on now in social media about the programme and people have been questioning the necessity of organising such big events in the heart of the city.

Due to such programmes, the general public is forced to go through several problems as both private and government buses were hired by the organisers to ferry people to the felicitation event.

Hence, school going students, workers and others could not reach their destination on time. As there was no information about the traffic diversion and the shortage of bus by the district administration, many commuters were stranded in many places.

Due to these inconveniences, people have been questioning the necessity of organising such big programmes in Nehru Maidan. They also opine that if they are organised in the city’s outskirts, it is acceptable.

Nehru Maidan turned into a dumping yard

Though organisers the had assured of cleanliness prior to the programme, Nehru Maidan was just like a dumping yard even on the next day after the programme. Empty food packets, water bottles, buttermilk packets and other leftovers were scattered all around the ground. The organisers had also displayed hundreds of flex banners across the city, including on road medians posing danger to motorists.

Commissioner of Police T R Suresh when contacted told newskarnataka.com that he would consult the deputy commissioner and hold a discussion to decide on whether to give permission for such mammoth programmes in Nehru Maidan or not. “As the silver jubilee programme caused a lot of inconvenience to the people, we need to find other alternative venues to hold mega-events”, he said.

Meanwhile, Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer when contacted confirmed to newskarnataka.com that the complaint was already filed.
