Quest for the golden chicken patty

The dish straight out of Deutschland, Hamburger is a demonym of a North German city named Hamburg. Though it is originally from Germany, chefs all across the globe have adopted this dish and tweaked the taste to suit the taste buds of their target foodies.
Originally the burgers were created in Germany with ground beef patties and then branched out to lamb, pork, chicken and even seafood burgers. In Mangaluru however, there are ample number of burger joints that intrigue every burger lover in the city. Some joints serve beef, some pork and all chicken.

We at Newskarnataka went on a quest to three such joints who are successful in Mangaluru and have listed out their innovations in the art of sandwiching meat and veggies between two buns and also how each of them make it differently.

Knock Knock – The Burger Bistro

Knock Knock…
Who’s there?
Patty
Patty who?
Unfrozen, freshly fried patty

Keeping this badly made knock knock joke aside, the truth stands that “Knock Knock – The Burger Bistro” definitely doesn’t treat burgers like a joke. The burgers that are available here are sure to win hearts due to the composition of the patty and how it is made.

The finest choice of fresh vegetables and lettuce sit above the patty which is made of finely shredded and ground chicken with little pieces of onions. Throw in a slice of cheese in the burger and it automatically tastes better.

The patty is as juicy as possible and pretty thick enough for a fill. The Burger Bistro is indeed generous with the amount of mayonnaise they spread inside the burger. Apart from chicken, their burgers are available in lamb and beef as well.

Burger Bistro also makes some of the finest Oreo and Snicker shakes in town. But if you like to keep eating more of the burgers or other dishes, it is advisable to avoid the shakes since they fill you up. These shakes are a better pick over the ice tea and ginger ale the bistro provides.

Mangala Restaurant

The restaurant which bears the name of Mangalore’s origin definitely has an array of items in its menu which mostly draws people craving for home food since 1981. But one item on the menu that they introduced a few years ago is their signature burger, the “Freddie”.

Freddies come in various fillings but the size and accompaniment remains the same. All the Freddies come with spiced potato wafers by the side and a whole lot of goodies between the buns. The toasted burger bun definitely keeps the composition of the burger intact and doesn’t get soggy and the cheese too blends perfectly with the patties.

Their ever famous “Phat Freddie” comes with juicy pork patty dressed with semi crispy bacon strips. Phat Freddie is definitely a tummy filler since the patty just hits the spot with its thickness and juiciness. The chicken Freddie is just the same as Phat Freddie except that the patty is chicken and no bacon toppings in it. But overall, the chicken burger is equally as succulent as the Phat Freddie.

The Freddie has very little veggies in it but the glazed onions, lettuce and pickled chillies makes up for what is not added. Mangala Restaurant serves liquor on their menu including various shots and cocktails. Since we do not endorse liquor in our review, the mocktails are worth a try.

Chef’s Supreme, the Titanic burger that sinks in with yum!

The Chef’s Restaurant branches in Nanthoor, Falnir and Mannagudda are famous for their burgers with a variety of chicken fillings. Since we were looking at burgers with patties, we hesitantly decided to keep the chilly chicken, bar-b-que style chicken and chicken tikka burgers aside and focus on the pattie. The recommended burger for the pattie is Chef’s Supreme and it does stand up to its name.

While the Chef’s Supreme burger is decently priced, it comes stuffed with tomatoes, mayonnaise, cheese, chicken salami, egg and a semi crispy partly dry pattie. Salt content in the salami surely adds to the overall taste of the burger while complementing the pattie.

Chef’s Restaurant has been making burgers for over a decade now and they are doing quite a good job at it. The bun is definitely not soggy but it is huge. The supreme is sure to satisfy foodies while at the same time cater to their hunger.

Accompanying the burger with “Fizzies” (flavoured fizzy drinks) is a good idea if you do not want to fill your tummy up with a milk shake before you finish eating.
