Dharwad: The much awaited dream of people of Dharwad to have a full fledged super market complex will soon become a reality in the near future with the Centre giving clearance to many of the development projects planned under the Smart City Project in Hubballi-Dharwad.

The super market complex was one such project planned by the Hubballi-Dharwad Muncipal Corporation (HDMC) in view of the public outcry on the unhygienic condition at the existing market place. It was decided in 2009 to construct a six-storey shopping complex of about 45,000 square meters on 3.9 acres of land available in the existing market area.

The HDMC in the past had written to the Urban Development department seeking permission for remodeling its Rs. 120 crore project, as none of the private players responded to the three tenders floated in this regard. The HDMC intended to remodel the project from Public Private Partnership (PPP) to lease-cum-sale basis, for which the government did not respond and the project was in jeopardy.

Traders here had demanded the Government to fund the project instead of calling tenders which delay the process.

Upset over the project taking backstage, some of the businessmen had even thought of knocking the court’s door seeking direction to the local authority to expedite the process of implementing the project.

Speaking to NewsKarnataka, the HDMC Special Officer SH Naregal said since the Centre has cleared many development projects under Smart City Project, we would float new tenders under PPP model and the super market complex would be realized soon.

The New Year would usher in many development works in the twin cities, the super market project would be one among them, he said.

The market complex will have six floors, with a built up area of 45,000 square meters on in 3.9 acres of land available in existing marketing area, out of the total 5.35 acres. Basement 1 and 2 along with ground floor must be handed over to HDMC, and floors 3, 4 and 5 will be owned by the builder under joint venture project, wherein the Corporation will only part with the land and the builder will invest on the entire infrastructure.

People who were worried over stepping in to the existing market, especially in rainy season have to wait for some more seasons to see the new market complex.
