The road leading to Tannirbavi Beach is dark and dangerous

Mangaluru: The coastal city Mangaluru which is known for its beach tourism needs more focus with regard to the development of beaches. Tannirbavi too has one of the famous beaches in Mangaluru and hundreds of tourists visit here everyday. However, the sorry state is that there is no single street lamp along the road which leads to the Tannirbavi beach.

It may be recalled that a few years ago some miscreants had manhandled the then deputy commissioner of the district and his wife when they had been to the Tannirbavi beach. Though the police department succeeded in nabbing the miscreants later, no measures were taken up to prevent such incidents at the beach. If the road that leads to Tannirbavi beach lacks a basic facility like street lamps, how can it attract more tourists?, questions public.

Street lights are always proposed at the locations where the pedestrian movement is dense. The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) officials say that the Tannirbavi Beach road falls under the New Mangaluru Port Trust (NMPT) and that it is the latter’s responsibility to install street lamps. The Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) is also located on Tannirbavi Road, which is just 2.5 Km away from the Kuloor Bridge. As hundreds of oil tankers also ply on the same stretch everyday, street lamps are the need of the hour.

This road also connects to the `Tree Park` which is located around 6.5 Km from the national highway. A tourist attraction, `Tree Park` is losing visitors of the lack of street lamps. Though Mangaluru is in the Smart City list, it is shameful that these kind of anomalies still exist.

Rakshath of Hassan district, who is working as a lorry driver in Baikampady Industrial Area told Newskarnataka that he is always frightened while walking by this road. “Several incidents of chain snatching, eve teasing among others occur on this stretch as there are no street lamps here. As my rented room is located near Tannirbavi Beach, it is inevitable for me to use the same stretch”, he laments.

Street lamps will be installed soon: MCC Commissioner

MCC Commissioner Mohammed Nazir when contacted, told Newskarnataka that none has complained regard this so far. “Tannirbavi Road comes under NMPT limits and they need to install street lamps. However, maintaining the street lamp is the responsibility of MCC. I will communicate the same to the officials of NMPT and take immediate measures to install street lamps”, he assured.

M T Krishna Babu, Chairman of NMPT, told Newskarnataka that he would discuss the issue with the engineer concerned. “If it is necessary, we will take the requisite measures to rectify the problems”, he assured.
