The liver is one of the important organs in our body which carries out over 500 functions related to immunity, metabolism, excretion and nutrient storage. When the liver is unhealthy, it affects not just how well the kidney, lungs, heart, and brain work but also the digestive tract.

To increase public awareness of diseases affecting the liver, World Liver Day is observed every year on April 19. As the organ is in charge of immunity, digestion and metabolism, it is important to maintain a healthy liver. The theme for this year is ‘‘Be Vigilant, Do Regular Liver Check-Up, Fatty Liver Can Affect Anyone.’ The day also focuses to promote a healthy lifestyle, discourage the consumption of fatty foods, and raise awareness of liver diseases.

Around 20 lakh people worldwide die from liver diseases each year. Half of these deaths are due to cirrhosis and the other half are due to viral hepatitis and hepatocellular cancer. Studies even show that liver issues are the tenth most frequent cause of death in India. Excessive fat accumulation may affect liver health. Appetite loss, abdominal pain, jaundice, and weight loss are a few of the symptoms of liver problems that are frequently seen. Liver problems often arise from poor lifestyle choices, lack of exercise, excessive alcohol and unhealthy food consumption.

The following actions can help to maintain a healthy liver.

* Eat a nutritious, balanced diet that is high in protein and fibre

* Regular physical activity and meditation to lower stress

* Avoid drinking and smoking

* Maintaining a healthy weight

* Avoid self-medication
