Cricket is one of the most loved sports in the world. The sport has its origin dating back to 19 CE. The game originally started as a bilateral test match between two teams, however, with the evolution of the world and the increased range of cricket-playing nations, the International trophy began.
In 1975, for the first time, a format was announced and a tournament was played. England hosted the first-ever World Cup tournament. The format was decided as a One Day match of 60 overs played for both teams. The inaugural tournament ended as West Indies emerged as the World Champions.
The tournament became a success and in the following World Cup in 1979, history repeated again as the dominant West Indies retained the title and became two-time World Champions. In 1983, the cricket world cup was again hosted by England for the third time in a row. In 1983, West Indies played against India in the finals and India defeated the powerhouse Windies and became the World Champions. India’s win against Caribeans was the last time the World Cup had a 60-over format.
Only West Indies and India have won the 60 over World Cup. India’s next World Cup triumph came 24 years later and it was in the 20 over format, India won the inaugural T20 World Cup against Pakistan in the finals.
Four years later, India under the captaincy of MS Dhoni won the ODI World Cup. 2011 World Cup win was the second One Day International World Cup India won, but this time in a 50 over format.
The record India is having in the World Cups is, India has won the World Cups of all the organised formats in 20 overs, 50 overs and 60 overs. There is only one team in the world that can match this record and they are the West Indies.
