“A total of 6% of GDP was promised to be set aside for Healthcare sector and so far only 1 % is being utilised by the government during the pandemic times,” said Dr Srinivas Kakkillaya. He said that the government is lying and turning a deaf ear to the health sector which needs the most amount of attention at this juncture. This ignorance on the government’s part have created many other problems.
A recurring theme seen in the hospitals since the break of Corona are the complaints made by patients that the hospitals are extorting an enormous amount of money from them. When speaking on what may be the root cause of this, Dr Kakkillaya says the lack of funding from the government has led the hospitals to charge money for their services which the people might not be able to handle during the Covid times when the economy has been affected.
“Government is not using the money that it is allotted and only using the existing amount of money,” he said. He questioned why our country cannot have built Hospitals and facilities like China did in Wuhan. During the outbreak of the first wave, within a span of 10 days, a hospital was erected to treat the rising number of Covid cases. “What we see right now is that the existing infrastructure which was temporarily built during the first wave too is being dismantled.”
He said that the government is not spending enough money on Health care and education sector as the premises of it not being productive enough. “If they think so then maybe someone should educate them again!” retorted Dr Kakillaya.
The government is driving people to private sector with such steps and thus the cost of everything will increase with the private sector into selling business having only profit motive , notes Dr Kakillaya. Once it gets privatised, the government does not have a say in any of the decision made and ultimately, there will be increase in cost of all the services, he added.
