How to choose my course after class X

“It is better to prevent and prepare, than repent and repair”

Think well before you choose your courses after Class X

•    A good start will always be a result of good thoughts. Take time to understand yourself the best you can. Understand your Interests first and then focus on your abilities. Choice of courses based only on ability is not the right way forward. What you want to do? Is a more relevant question than what you can do?

•    Your success in life is not determined solely by the course you choose after class X. Yes, it does help to be more thoughtful before choosing what you think is best for you but, if you happen to realise that what you chose is not meant for you, do not be disheartened. Every passing day, one becomes more aware of self and hence makes becomes more practical in decision making.

•    Be very selfish while choosing your courses. Do not choose your course based on your peers or friends popular choices, opinion of parents friends when they meet at a party or social gathering, relatives when they come home during vacations or like in most cases choice of older siblings. Following the same profession as your parents too wouldn’t assure you similar success if you do not feel you really want to pursue it.

•    There is no “good course” or a “bad course” as most students think there is. No course is superior or inferior to the other. There are only different courses that are available to you based on your interests, personality, ability and feasibility. Each and every course you choose does have unquantifiable opportunities. The word “scope” does not mean only those positions that would be available to you in good time. It also means those invisible opportunities visionaries can make their own.

•    Your marks should never determine which course you choose. If you are a distinction holder and are interested in hands on technical fields, do not even hesitate to pursue a diploma assuming it to be unsuitable considering your high marks/ too low for your image or on the other hand assume that pre-university Science stream is out of reach for you considering only a first-class percentage in class X. There are always more choices than we think there are. It is only that at most times, our choices are based on what people may think about us!!

•    A successful career is determined by the right attitude towards life. When we strike a good combination of right decisions, short-term goals, uncomplicated thoughts, willingness to achieve, and use our talent to the best with the right attitude, we eventually succeed.

•    Failing to achieve does not make us losers. It only says that we are trying to invent, discover or explore new things in life. In converse, the one who rarely fails in life needn’t assume that he is destined to conquer the world. It may also mean, he only involves himself in those things he has tried and tested before and he realises the success probability. Chances are that his life may turn out to be a victim of success and stagnancy.

•    Choose those institutions that promote multiple areas of learning and talent. We have many institutions that promote a wide range of talent along with academics. Students who choose such institutions will be benefitted with the luxury of possessing the crucial foundation to enhance their skills in communication, organising events, performing arts, sports, leadership etc that would prove to be a defining factor in their personality that would lead to a successful career.

•    An individuals career does not merely depend on the reputation or the calibre of the institution he is a crop of, or the course he has chosen in PU or Degree. It will only be a result of striking the right balance between, positive thinking, attitude of a winner and good choices.

So folks, do reflect on the following protocol before you arrive at your decision and concentrate on your personal virtues

Step 1Understand yourself well and know your strengths and weaknesses.

This will help you develop your personal long term and short term goals. And remember to choose your courses that help you achieve those goals.

Step 2- Explore your INTEREST.

Your choice of course should be largely based on your personal INTEREST, and ability should always be the secondary consideration. If you happen to make the mistake of choosing your course based on Ability and you have no Interest in it, you may be catching the wrong train, which may eventually land you where you are not meant to be.

Step 3- Assess your true Ability.

One could always improve on Ability if he/she has the Interest. However, each of the courses that you may choose has their own set of required skill and capacity.

Some courses suit your personality and mentality, while some really don’t. Take for instance, you happen to be an extrovert by nature, and you pursue science in PUC because you scored well in high school, and then you don’t quite enjoy the subject and score poorly, and then you are compelled to pursue a B.Sc course and end up in research laboratory after the completion of post- graduation, it can totally damage your confidence levels and self- identity. So always choose wisely.

Step 4- Choose your Course

Each course and branch that you choose will certainly lead you to a successful territory if you have chosen it with your intent. However one should realise who am I meant to be? And what virtues I need to possess

Science is for Creators- The ones who have chosen science as their stream, will be encouraged to learn about the various physical, chemical and biological resources that exist around us- research and quantify them and create/ develop facilities for the benefit of those around them.

The ones who choose science streams would have to be thinkers, need to possess good learning skills, patient, inquisitive, Creative, futuristic, practical, experimenting, Calculative and self-motivated. Since you may end up in research labs, plants, clinics, plants, sites one day and would need to work with dedication and conviction to achieve good results, introverts and ambiverts end up being very successful in most fields of science.

Commerce is for those who would use both the resources and the creations around them and keep the world moving. Commerce is what brings technology, people and wealth on one plate and make them work together. Therefore it requires administrators, entrepreneurs, traders, investors, bankers, executives and thinkers who are progressive in nature.

Economy of the world matters a great deal with regards to how commerce functions. Since the opportunities this branch offers are unique and vast, the ones who wish to pursue it need to be self-motivated and practical. Awareness of trends, current affairs, knowledge of how stuff works globally would certainly distinguish the best from the rest. Commerce happens to be one of those fields that offer an opportunity to multiple range of personalities. While extroverts can do very well in management, entrepreneurship, education and administration, ambiverts have investment banking, chartered finance or accountancy to suit their personality. Introverts could also feel at home in core banking, back office, clerical fields too. In recent years, commerce has been the most preferred course in comparison to the other core courses in PU.

The field of Arts is a very unique one in many ways. It is perhaps least dependent on the other factors or resources around them. The ones who are into this field regard themselves as the most important resource available. Their self- confidence, personality, ability, attitude and intent are their virtues. In most cases, they prioritize practical exposure, development of personality and talent more than academic success.

Any Student whose goal is to become a performer, creative artiste, work in the media, author, get into public services, or counselling will be benefitted a great deal if he/she chooses Arts. Again, there are opportunities on offer for various types of personalities. To be successful in the fields of media, performing arts etc, one needs to be an extrovert. On the contrary, if one is an introvert, he/ she could be a good author, creative artiste and so on.

Technical training courses (Diploma) are only for those who are extremely practical in nature. The field encourages them to possess the “hands on” approach to their education. The students will be benefitted with the knowledge of “how to do things” in addition to “what are the things available to them”.

Diploma courses are available in a very wide array. Computers, Automobiles, Electronics, Architectural, Industrial sectors are a broad classification. Students who pursue diplomas would be in a very good position to handle processes like converting raw materials into finished products in the industries, creating stuff from designs, building and servicing facilities, machinery, automobile, equipment and so on. Individuals need to be very practical, creative, futuristic, strong physically for most sectors, adventurous and patient. It is forecasted that demand for technical courses would be on a comprehensive rise in the near future. Skilled individuals are already starting to make their mark in the category of the high earners in the global industry.

Step 5- It is all about convincing your parents

The most prevalent problem that students bring to our notice is “I want to take up ##### course in PUC, but my parents want me to take up @@@@@ course”. Remember dear students, most of you all make the mistake of only mentioning to your parents about the fact that you want to take up a particular course, and that too, after your class X final examination. What you need to do is also convince you parents as to “WHY” you prefer that course over the other. This will show your sense of maturity and willingness, which may get them on your side. So do not make the mistake of leaving it too late to decide on your future. Give some time for yourself, RIGHT NOW!!! And start thinking about what you are all about and what you would want to do? This will certainly help you make good decisions for yourself. If you are still confused, do not hesitate to take professional help. Because, if you wish to help yourself, you will eventually end up getting assistance from others too.
