Education has played an important role in human life today. Education is the guiding light for all-round development. We have already understood that it is through education that the human personality is shaped. However, in today’s modern era, science and technology have continued to have a tremendous impact on the field of education. As a result, we have acquired the ability to see through the visual medium what we can read and learn from the book.
As the adage goes, “Look around the country, read the cell and see”, we can develop our knowledge to a greater extent by visiting places related to learning topics to get a real experience. One of my own experiences in this regard was when I was studying in 2nd PUC, Warija, a lecturer in biology, took us to a laboratory at Nitte Medical College, Moodabidri to give us more knowledge on the same subject while she was teaching us about the organs of the human body and gave us information about the internal organs of the human body and their function. This led us to understand how there is a difference between the method of lecture in education and the actual way of learning.
So even in today’s education system if students are educated by giving them real experience, their knowledge can be upgraded. Teachers can enhance the quality of education by taking students to planetariums, laboratories, zoos, bird sanctuaries and historical places as far as the subject of learning is concerned.
Apart from these, we can also learn about antiques, coins, armaments, tools, machines, etc. by visiting our nearby museums. The museum is a collection of rarely seen objects where historical, scientific, art, and literary related tools are collected and displayed to the people.
The importance of the museum in our modern education
The museum plays an important role in the field of education. The teacher takes the students to the museum and then goes to the subject of the lesson. This provides an opportunity to view objects but also will improve the quality of learning of the students. It also will inculcate greater interest in learning and know how much knowledge they have acquired when they ask for experiences about the material they have seen. The museum has several models. By collecting items, it makes the next generation of youth aware of the importance of those items.
The moment I visited the museum
When I, along with my classmates, visited the Aloysius Museum while studying for my first year BEd. at St. Aloysius Institute of Education there was a nagaradhana of Tulunadu’s culture, Idols of ancient gods, metal objects, Musical instruments, weapons of war used by kings, apart from the tools and books used in agriculture. Also as far as Science is concerned, I noticed the skeletons of animals and the specimens of frog-like organisms and the first car that came to Mangaluru.
After observing all this, I, as a teacher, realised that just teaching students could not elevate their level of knowledge but by giving them real experience rather they could acquire much more than mere knowledge.
In this regard, we can work to develop the knowledge of the students only when we teach values and in a practical way along with modern education. While information can also be conveyed to students from computers, mobiles, etc., it is imperative to inform the students about their ills of them. But it is my hope that we can give knowledge based on real experience by taking students to other important places.
