South African cricket legend AB de Villiers faced backlash from fans after commenting on the controversy surrounding the trophy presentation at the Asia Cup 2025 final. India defeated Pakistan by five wickets to claim the title, but the Suryakumar Yadav-led side refused to receive the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief Mohsin Naqvi, citing political tensions.
De Villiers expressed disappointment over India’s decision, stating that politics should remain separate from sport.
“Team India sort of weren’t happy with who was handing out the trophy. I don’t feel that belongs in sport. Politics should stay aside,” he said.
He added that the situation was awkward for players:
“Sport is one thing, and it should be celebrated for what it is. Quite sad to see that, but hopefully they will sort things out in the future. It puts the players in a very tough position, and that’s what I hate to see.”
Fans react
Several cricket fans on social media criticised De Villiers, arguing that he was overlooking the political sensitivities influencing India’s decision. The Asia Cup controversy had already seen India-Pakistan political relations overshadow the tournament, with the lack of handshakes and on-field gestures dominating headlines despite India going unbeaten to lift the trophy.
Praise for Team India
Despite the criticism, De Villiers lauded India’s performance during the tournament, highlighting their strong team composition and ability to perform in high-pressure moments.
“Let’s focus on what’s most important — the cricket itself. India are looking really strong, building up to the big T20 World Cup. They’ve got a lot of talent and play the big moments well. Fantastic to watch,” he said.
De Villiers’ remarks have reignited discussions about the fine line between politics and sportsmanship in high-profile international cricket encounters.
