New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday announced India’s 15-member squad for the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, springing a major surprise by dropping star batter Shubman Gill and appointing all-rounder Axar Patel as vice-captain. The tournament will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, 2026.
Gill’s exclusion has drawn attention as he was the vice-captain during the Asia Cup 2025 and had been a regular member of India’s white-ball setup. However, selectors cited poor form and team combination as reasons for his omission. In another notable development, wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has made a comeback to the national side after an impressive domestic season, while Rinku Singh has also returned to the T20I squad.
Axar Patel elevated, leadership group reshaped
Axar Patel’s appointment as vice-captain signals the selectors’ faith in his consistency and all-round value in the shortest format. Known for his economical bowling, sharp fielding and ability to contribute crucial runs down the order, Axar has emerged as a dependable performer in high-pressure matches.
Suryakumar Yadav has been retained as captain, continuing his leadership role after guiding the side through recent bilateral series. With Axar as his deputy, the team management appears keen on maintaining stability and balance within the leadership group ahead of a home World Cup.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained that the selection was driven by team balance rather than individual reputations. “We are looking at combinations. Gill is a quality player and it’s unfortunate for him to miss out, but this is the combination we want going forward,” Agarkar said.
Gill dropped amid form concerns
Shubman Gill’s absence from the squad has been attributed to a disappointing run of form in recent T20 internationals. Despite being one of India’s most technically gifted batters, Gill struggled to convert starts into big scores, prompting the selectors to explore alternative options at the top of the order.
In Gill’s absence, Sanju Samson is expected to open the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma. Samson, who will also shoulder wicketkeeping duties, has shown improved consistency in recent outings, while Abhishek’s aggressive approach suits India’s intent to dominate powerplays.
Ishan Kishan and Rinku Singh return
One of the biggest positives from the squad announcement is the return of Ishan Kishan. The wicketkeeper-batter earned his recall following a stellar campaign in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he played a key role in guiding Jharkhand to the title. His explosive batting at the top of the order and experience in international cricket strengthened his case for selection.
Agarkar clarified that Kishan’s inclusion was also influenced by the need for an additional wicketkeeper. “Sanju is at the top, Ishan also bats at the top. We felt he is the best backup keeper at this point,” he said.
Rinku Singh, who missed India’s recent 3-1 T20I series win in South Africa, has also made a comeback. Known for his finishing abilities, Rinku adds depth and firepower to the middle order, especially in crunch situations.
Squad composition and bowling strength
The selected squad reflects a strong emphasis on all-rounders and bowling depth. Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar provide multiple bowling options and batting flexibility. The pace attack will be led by Jasprit Bumrah, supported by Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, while the spin department features Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy and Sundar.
This combination gives India the ability to adapt to different conditions across venues in India and Sri Lanka, where pitches are expected to offer varying degrees of assistance to pacers and spinners.
Tournament format and India’s fixtures
The Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 will feature 40 group-stage matches, with the top two teams from each of the four groups advancing to the Super Eights starting February 21. India have been placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, USA, Netherlands and Namibia.
India will begin their campaign against USA at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on February 7, followed by a clash against Namibia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on February 12. The much-anticipated India–Pakistan match is scheduled for February 15 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. India will conclude their league stage against the Netherlands at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on February 18.
As defending champions, India will be aiming to create history by becoming the first team to successfully defend the Men’s T20 World Cup title, the first to win the tournament on home soil, and the first to lift the trophy three times.

Conclusion
The announcement of India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad reflects a bold and forward-looking approach by the selectors, prioritising form, flexibility and balance over reputation.
