Bengaluru: Just days before the start of the Indian Premier League 2026, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has introduced a set of updated guidelines for all franchises, aiming to streamline operations and ensure fairness throughout the tournament.
The season kicks off on March 28, with defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru taking on Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
No practice sessions on match days
One of the most significant changes is the ban on practice sessions on match days. Teams will not be allowed to train on the day of their matches, a move aimed at preserving pitch conditions and ensuring a fair contest.
Additionally, teams are prohibited from conducting fitness tests on match days, further tightening matchday protocols.
Strict rules for practice facilities
The BCCI has also laid down detailed guidelines regarding the use of practice facilities.
At venues like Wankhede Stadium, each team will be allocated:
- Two practice nets
- One side wicket on the main square for range-hitting
If two teams are training simultaneously, both sides will receive equal access to facilities.
Importantly, teams are not allowed to use practice areas assigned to their opponents — even if those areas remain unused. This rule is designed to maintain fairness and avoid disputes.
Guidelines for players’ families and travel
The board has also tightened off-field regulations, particularly concerning players’ families and logistics.
- Teams must travel to and from venues only via designated team buses
- Family members and friends are not permitted to enter the field of play during training sessions
- They can watch practice only from designated hospitality areas
These measures are intended to enhance security and maintain discipline around team environments.
Dress code enforcement tightened
The BCCI has reiterated strict adherence to dress code rules during matches and presentations.
Players awarded the Orange Cap and Purple Cap must wear them during post-match ceremonies as instructed, reinforcing uniformity and branding standards across the league.
