Mumbai: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly begun early preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, shortlisting around 20 probable players whose performances will be closely monitored during the upcoming Indian Premier League 2026 season.
According to a report, the selectors have already drawn up a tentative list and will use IPL 2026 as a key platform to evaluate player form, fitness, and consistency ahead of the global tournament.
Selectors to track players closely
The selection panel, comprising SS Das, RP Singh, Ajay Ratra, and Pragyan Ojha, is expected to actively monitor matches throughout the IPL season.
Selectors will attend games at various venues and also track performances via broadcast coverage, ensuring regular assessment of players across franchises.
“The BCCI is looking at each selector watching at least one game per week, covering multiple matches either at venues or on television,” a source said.
The IPL 2026 season is set to begin with Royal Challengers Bengaluru facing Sunrisers Hyderabad in Bengaluru.
Focus firmly on ODI World Cup
Despite a packed international calendar, including the Los Angeles Olympics 2028 and the T20 World Cup in 2028, the report suggests that selectors are unlikely to factor these tournaments into their evaluation process at this stage.
Instead, the focus will remain firmly on building a strong and balanced squad for the 50-over World Cup in 2027. The selectors are also reportedly not inclined to fast-track untested breakout players, preferring proven performers.
Key bowlers on radar
Among the players expected to be closely tracked are India’s frontline pacers, including Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Arshdeep Singh.
All-rounder Hardik Pandya is also expected to remain a key figure in the selectors’ plans, given his ability to contribute in both departments.
Meanwhile, pacer Harshit Rana, currently recovering from a knee injury, may take time before returning to contention.
No compromise on Test commitments
The report also highlights that the selection committee does not intend to weaken the Test squad for a one-off match against Afghanistan scheduled in June.
Despite the match not carrying World Test Championship points, top players are expected to be available, reflecting the importance placed on maintaining standards in the longest format.
With nine Tests lined up between August and March, India’s leading red-ball bowlers are likely to feature consistently, barring injury concerns.
“The India Test cap isn’t for experimentation. For that, you have India A tours,” the source added, underlining the selectors’ approach.
Conclusion: Early planning for long-term success
With more than a year to go for the ODI World Cup 2027, the BCCI’s proactive approach signals a clear intent to build a well-prepared and balanced squad.
By closely monitoring performances during IPL 2026, selectors aim to identify players who can handle pressure and deliver consistently on the international stage. The coming months could therefore play a crucial role in shaping India’s World Cup ambitions.
