Mumbai: Amid India’s recent struggles in T20I cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly kept the door open for Suryakumar Yadav to make a comeback to the national side.

The former T20I captain, who led India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title, was recently removed from leadership duties and dropped from the squad following a dip in form. However, a BCCI source has indicated that his return remains a possibility if he delivers consistent performances in domestic cricket.

BCCI signals conditional return

According to sources, Suryakumar is not currently part of the team’s immediate plans but continues to be in contention for future selection.

“Doors for Suryakumar Yadav are still open. He is not currently in the scheme of things, but he remains eligible to come back if he scores runs consistently in domestic cricket,” a BCCI source said.

The statement offers hope for the experienced batter, who has been one of India’s most dynamic T20 players in recent years.

Leadership change and team struggles

Following Suryakumar’s exit, Shreyas Iyer was appointed as the new T20I captain. However, India’s performance under the new leadership has been underwhelming.

The India national cricket team suffered a 2-0 series defeat against Ireland cricket team—their first-ever bilateral T20I series loss to Ireland. This was followed by a disappointing 4-0 defeat to England cricket team in a five-match series, with one match ending in a no-result due to rain.

India’s defeats included:

  • A 56-run loss in the fifth T20I at Southampton
  • A nine-wicket defeat in the fourth match
  • A heavy 125-run loss in the third T20I
  • A four-wicket defeat in the second game

These results have raised concerns about the team’s direction in the shortest format.

Pressure mounts on team management

India’s back-to-back series losses have intensified scrutiny on team selection, leadership decisions, and overall strategy. The absence of experienced players like Suryakumar has been widely debated, especially given the team’s struggles in the middle order.

While Iyer’s appointment was seen as a move towards building a new leadership group, the results have not gone in India’s favour so far.

Focus shifts to ODI series

India will now look to reset as they prepare for the upcoming ODI series against England. The return of senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma is expected to strengthen the squad and provide much-needed stability.

Their presence could help India regain confidence after a string of disappointing T20I results.

Road ahead for Suryakumar

For Suryakumar Yadav, the message from the BCCI is clear—perform consistently in domestic cricket to earn a recall. Given his proven track record and match-winning abilities, a strong run in domestic tournaments could quickly bring him back into contention.

As India looks to rebuild and regain momentum, experienced players like Suryakumar may still have a crucial role to play in the team’s future.
