Karnataka is rapidly becoming the center of tennis in India, with Bengaluru at the forefront. The city’s Bengaluru Open recently achieved a significant milestone by advancing to a Challenger 125 event, making it a key fixture in the nation’s tennis calendar. This year, the tournament’s prize pool has increased to $200,000, a substantial upgrade from its original $50,000 status in 2015.

According to Sunil Yajaman, the Tournament Director and joint-secretary of the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA), the rise in prestige was a deliberate move. KSLTA’s leadership, along with strong corporate partnerships, helped facilitate the event’s growth. Bengaluru’s promotion to a Challenger 125 event is part of a larger effort to develop tennis in tier-2 and tier-3 cities across Karnataka. With tennis facilities spread over 12 districts, the state association is ensuring young talent in smaller cities gets the right exposure.

Yajaman also highlighted that grassroots initiatives such as district coaching programs and regional camps will continue to nurture future tennis champions.

The Bengaluru Open has steadily gained corporate backing, with sponsors eager to be associated with the event’s growing stature. As Bengaluru’s popularity as a tennis hub increases, there’s hope that it could eventually host an ATP 250 event.

Overall, Karnataka’s tennis culture is flourishing, with Bengaluru leading the charge towards an even brighter future.
