Chester-le-Street: Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has cautioned that the continued wait for teenage prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to make his international debut could add extra pressure on the 15-year-old ahead of India’s ongoing T20I series against England.

Sooryavanshi, one of the most talked-about young talents in Indian cricket, was once again left out of the playing XI for the first T20I of the five-match series, despite strong expectations around his inclusion.

Gavaskar highlights mental challenge

Gavaskar said that while the youngster’s talent is unquestionable, the uncertainty around his debut could increase expectations whenever he eventually gets his chance.

He noted that at just 15 years of age, players may not always feel the same pressure as senior professionals, but the awareness of high expectations can still have an impact. According to him, Sooryavanshi will be expected to deliver quickly once selected, given the level of hype surrounding his performances in domestic and franchise cricket.

Massive rise after IPL breakthrough

Sooryavanshi has been in the spotlight after an exceptional Indian Premier League 2026 season, where he reportedly scored 776 runs in 16 innings and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. His performances earned him a call-up to India’s squad for the tour of Ireland and England.

Despite his inclusion in the squad, he is yet to make his debut, with team management continuing to back more experienced options at the top of the order.

Records within reach

If Sooryavanshi does feature later in the series, he would become one of the youngest players ever to appear in top-level men’s T20 cricket. At 15 years and 96 days, he would break several age-related milestones, including records held by players like Ireland’s Joshua Little.

He would also become the youngest cricketer to represent India in senior men’s cricket, surpassing the early debut ages of legends such as Sachin Tendulkar.

India show mixed batting display

In the opening T20I, India struggled early after losing quick wickets, but recovered through key contributions from captain Shreyas Iyer and Abhishek Sharma, who helped stabilise the innings.

Late hitting from Shivam Dube ensured India posted a competitive total, despite early setbacks. England’s Saqib Mahmood was the standout bowler, taking three wickets and restricting India during key phases.

Conclusion

While Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continues to wait for his long-anticipated India debut, Sunil Gavaskar’s comments underline the importance of managing expectations around young talents. As the series progresses, all eyes will remain on whether India finally hands the teenager his international opportunity.
