London: India’s Test captain Shubman Gill has picked Jannik Sinner as his favourite to win the Wimbledon 2026 men’s singles title, backing the World No. 1 ahead of Alexander Zverev in the final.

Gill, who was present at the semi-final at the iconic All England Club, shared his views after watching Zverev defeat Britain’s Arthur Fery to reach his maiden Wimbledon final.

Gill backs Sinner’s all-round game

Speaking about the upcoming summit clash, Gill expressed strong confidence in Sinner’s ability to clinch the title.

“I’m backing Sinner to win Wimbledon. He is a fantastic player, and he carries himself really well both on and off the court,” Gill said.

Sinner enters the final in dominant form, having defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the semi-final. The Italian secured a convincing 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win over the seven-time champion, booking his place in a second consecutive Wimbledon final.

His clinical performance and composure under pressure have made him the favourite going into the title clash.

Zverev reaches maiden Wimbledon final

On the other hand, Zverev scripted a milestone moment in his career by advancing to his first Wimbledon final.

The German star showcased resilience and control to overcome Arthur Fery, delighting fans with his steady baseline play and improved consistency on grass. His run to the final marks a significant achievement, considering his previous struggles at the tournament.

Despite Zverev’s impressive form, Gill believes Sinner’s current momentum and overall balance give him the edge.

Federer remains Gill’s sporting idol

Gill also spoke about his admiration for tennis legend Roger Federer, naming him as his favourite sportsperson.

The Indian cricketer praised Federer’s elegance and effortless style, noting that such grace is the result of years of hard work and dedication.

“Roger Federer is my favourite. Growing up, people said he made everything look effortless. But when you play a sport yourself, you realise how much work goes into it,” Gill said.

He added that he relates to those observations in cricket, where his own batting style is often described as effortless.

Gill draws parallels with Alcaraz’s flair

Gill further highlighted similarities between cricket and tennis while discussing Carlos Alcaraz’s playing style.

He compared Alcaraz’s trademark drop shot to his own short-arm jab in cricket — a shot known for its speed and deceptive execution.

“The drop shot that Alcaraz plays reminds me of the short-arm jab in cricket. It’s quick, deceptive, and very effective,” he explained.

This comparison reflects Gill’s deep appreciation for technique and innovation across sports.

Anticipation builds for Wimbledon final

With Sinner in peak form and Zverev chasing a historic maiden title, the Wimbledon 2026 final promises to be a thrilling contest. Gill’s backing adds to the growing expectation surrounding Sinner’s chances of lifting the trophy.

As the tennis world turns its attention to the grand finale, fans can expect a high-quality clash between two of the game’s leading stars on one of sport’s biggest stages.
