Ahmedabad: Shubman Gill criticised his team’s bowling performance despite Gujarat Titans being bowled out for just 100 in a heavy 99-run defeat against Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League 2026 clash on Monday.

Middle overs prove costly for Gujarat

Speaking after the match, Gill pointed out that Gujarat Titans conceded too many runs during the middle overs, which allowed Mumbai to post a commanding total.

“Honestly, I think we gave away too many runs in the middle overs. On a wicket like that, 160–170 was a par score,” Gill said, admitting that his side failed to capitalise on early breakthroughs.

Despite Kagiso Rabada picking up three wickets in the powerplay, MI recovered strongly to put up 199/5 on the board.

Tilak Varma’s ton powers MI

Mumbai’s innings was anchored by a sensational unbeaten century from Tilak Varma, who smashed 101 off just 45 balls—his maiden IPL hundred.

After early setbacks, MI accelerated in the death overs, taking full advantage of inconsistent bowling from the Gujarat attack.

Gill admits execution issues

Gill acknowledged that his bowlers struggled to hit the right areas consistently, especially on a sluggish pitch.

“I don’t think we hit the right areas. Some balls were coming on, some weren’t, and a few were keeping low. We could have been more consistent with our lengths in the middle overs,” he explained.

He also noted that conditions remained largely similar in the second innings, with slight improvement due to dew, but did not consider it a major factor in the defeat.

Batting collapse seals heavy defeat

Chasing 200, Gujarat Titans never found momentum. The team suffered an early collapse, losing Sai Sudharsan for a golden duck and slipping to 45/3 inside the powerplay.

The innings unravelled quickly as MI bowlers dominated. Ashwani Kumar starred with figures of 4/24, while Mitchell Santner (2/16) and AM Ghazanfar (2/17) chipped in to bundle GT out for just 100.

Record loss and points table impact

The 99-run defeat marked Gujarat Titans’ biggest loss margin in IPL history, surpassing their previous heavy defeats against Chennai Super Kings in earlier seasons.

With the win, Mumbai Indians climbed to seventh place with two victories from six matches, while Gujarat Titans slipped to sixth, holding three wins and three losses.

Conclusion

While Gujarat Titans’ batting collapse was evident, Shubman Gill’s remarks highlighted deeper concerns with bowling execution. As the tournament progresses, GT will need to address both departments quickly to stay competitive in IPL 2026.
