Historic Club Throw Triumph for India at Paralympics 2024

Paralympics

India made history at the 2024 Paralympics with a remarkable 1-2 finish in the men’s club throw F51 event, thanks to the extraordinary performances of Dharambir and Pranav Soorma. Their achievements have not only brought pride to the nation but also set new records in the sport.

Dharambir: From Tragedy to Triumph

Dharambir, 35, captured the gold medal with a stunning throw of 34.92m, setting a new Asian record and securing India’s first-ever medal in this category. His journey to the top has been nothing short of inspirational. Dharambir’s life changed dramatically after a diving accident in Sonipat, Haryana, left him paralyzed from the waist down. In 2014, he turned to para sports, focusing on club throw under the mentorship of fellow athlete Amit Kumar Saroha. Dharambir’s dedication saw him qualify for the 2016 Rio Paralympics, and his record-breaking throw at the 2024 Paralympics marked the pinnacle of his career, showcasing his resilience and determination.

Pranav Soorma: A Story of Resilience

Pranav Soorma, who secured the silver medal with a throw of 34.59m, also has a compelling story of overcoming adversity. At the age of 16, Pranav was paralyzed due to a severe spinal cord injury from a falling cement sheet. Despite this setback, he found solace and purpose in para athletics while hospitalised. His accomplishments include medals at international events such as the Serbia Open and Tunisia Grand Prix, but his silver medal at the 2024 Paralympics is a testament to his exceptional spirit and perseverance.

His victory represents a significant milestone for India, marking the country’s first gold in club throw at the Paralympics.

Pranav Soorma’s silver medal further exemplifies his impressive journey from personal tragedy to athletic success. His resilience and dedication reflect the transformative power of para sports.
