India’s T20I journey in 2025 began with a dominant seven-wicket victory over England in the series opener, captained by Suryakumar Yadav. The team now moves to Chennai for the second match, set to unfold at the renowned MA Chidambaram Stadium, commonly known as Chepauk. This will mark England’s first T20I appearance at the venue, while India will be playing here in the shortest format after a seven-year hiatus.
The last time India hosted a T20I at Chepauk was in November 2018, when the team, led by Rohit Sharma, triumphed over the West Indies by six wickets in a thrilling last-ball finish. Back then, the Indian squad was a very different one, and they chased down 182 runs in a nail-biting contest. West Indies posted 181/3, thanks to Nicholas Pooran’s explosive 53* off 25 balls. India responded with Shikhar Dhawan’s 92 from 62 balls and Rishabh Pant’s 58 off 38 deliveries, securing the series 3-0.
Fast forward to 2025, and the Chepauk game will see a new generation of players. None of the players from that 2018 match remain in the current squad, as Rohit Sharma has retired from T20Is, and Shikhar Dhawan and Dinesh Karthik have exited international cricket. Washington Sundar, however, is the lone survivor from that historic fixture.
