India’s women’s football team faced an unexpected setback ahead of their AFC Women’s Asian Cup opener against Vietnam, after players discovered that their match kits and training gear were ill-fitting and unsuitable for use.

In a strongly worded letter addressed to AIFF Deputy General Secretary M. Satyanarayanan, all 26 players in the squad expressed disappointment over the issue, stating that it had affected their morale during crucial preparations for the tournament.

Players raise concerns over kit sizes

According to the letter, the kits provided to the team were too small and appeared to be designed for Under-15 players, leaving nearly 80 per cent of the squad unable to wear them properly.

Even members of the coaching staff reportedly received incorrectly sized kits.

“Representing India on the international stage requires professional standards, including properly fitted and appropriate match and training apparel,” the players wrote.

They added that the arrival of unsuitable kits just two days before the opening match disrupted their focus during the final stages of preparation.

A historic tournament return

The players also highlighted the significance of the tournament, noting that it marks India’s return to a major continental competition after 23 years.

“This tournament is a significant moment for Indian women’s football,” the letter stated, while stressing that proper equipment is essential for athletes representing the country internationally.

Players demand immediate action

The letter, signed by senior players including captain Sweety Devi and Grace Dangmei, requested urgent intervention from the All India Football Federation (AIFF).

The team asked for:

  1. Immediate supply of properly sized match and training kits
  2. Confirmation that replacement kits would arrive before kickoff
  3. Clarification on steps to prevent similar incidents in the future

Despite their frustration, the players reaffirmed their commitment to representing the nation.

“We remain fully committed to representing our country with pride and giving our best performance,” the letter said.

AIFF responds

Following the complaint, the AIFF confirmed that new kits were arranged and delivered to the team, adding that the replacements had been approved by Asian Football Confederation (AFC) officials.

The development comes as India prepares to face Vietnam in their opening match, hoping to make a strong return to continental competition despite the unusual controversy surrounding the team’s preparations.
