Indian Golf Union Gears Up for Asia-Pacific Tournaments
The Indian Golf Union (IGU) is positioning itself to host prestigious Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC) tournaments in 2025 and 2026. This ambitious move is supported by global organizations such as the International Golf Federation (IGF), the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A), and the APGC itself.
To bolster its efforts, the IGU has sought financial backing from the Olympic Solidarity program. Presentations and official paperwork are already underway to secure the necessary resources. Adding to its momentum, the IGU recently attained full voting rights in the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), ensuring increased governmental support for golf in India.
IGU President Brijinder Singh emphasized the federation’s determination: “We have requested APGC to assign events to us and will continue advocating for this. Hosting such tournaments will give Indian golfers a chance to compete at home and leverage the home advantage.”
The federation’s proactive approach at international platforms, including the Asian Amateur Championship, has garnered positive feedback. Preparations for major Asia-Pacific events are set to begin as early as 2025.
Additionally, the IGU remains the custodian of the Indian Open, a $2 million event on the DP World Tour. With strong player fields in recent editions and enthusiastic support from sponsors like Hero, plans for the tournament’s next iteration are well underway.
The IGU’s initiatives signify a promising future for Indian golf, aiming to elevate the sport’s prominence on the global stage.
