India’s final squad for the forthcoming Champions Trophy has ignited much debate, with a number of unexpected picks and omissions. The most significant alteration involves Jasprit Bumrah, who was initially included in the team but was removed after the BCCI’s Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee decided not to take any chances with his fitness. Bumrah has been sidelined since suffering a back injury during the final Test against Australia in Sydney.
In his absence, Harshit Rana, an untested bowler, has been called up instead of Mohammed Siraj, who had played in all of India’s matches in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Despite Siraj’s consistent performances, he was named only as a traveling reserve, raising questions about Rana’s sudden elevation.
Additionally, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been left out in favor of spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, even though India already has four spinners in their squad.
