In a dramatic turn for Chennai Super Kings, Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of IPL 2025 after sustaining a hairline fracture in his right elbow. Head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed that MS Dhoni will take over the captaincy duties for the remainder of the season, starting with CSK’s next clash against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 11.

Ruturaj, who had been managing pain since taking a blow to the forearm during CSK’s loss to Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati, played the following match against Punjab Kings despite injury rumors. However, further scans revealed a fracture in the radial neck of his elbow, forcing him to withdraw from the tournament.

“Ruturaj tried to push through, but unfortunately he’s done for the season. We truly appreciate his effort,” said Fleming in the pre-match press conference. He added, tongue-in-cheek, “We have an uncapped player, MS Dhoni, who will now lead the side.”

The leadership change comes at a critical moment, with CSK struggling at the bottom of the table after four consecutive defeats. Gaikwad’s short stint as skipper hasn’t gone as hoped, with CSK winning only one of their first five matches this season.

Dhoni’s return to the helm has ignited a wave of excitement among fans, as the legendary captain eyes another comeback story. With five IPL titles under his belt, CSK will hope “Thala” can turn things around once again.
