Kolkata: The IPL 2026 playoffs race has taken a dramatic turn after Kolkata Knight Riders pulled off a stunning 29-run victory over Gujarat Titans, throwing the points table into fresh contention with just a few matches remaining.

KKR’s comeback keeps hopes alive

After a disastrous start to the season — losing five of their first six matches — KKR have mounted a remarkable comeback. The latest win lifts them to 11 points from 12 matches, placing them within striking distance of the top four.

The gap between KKR and third-placed Sunrisers Hyderabad is now just three points. If KKR win their remaining two fixtures, they could finish with 15 points — a tally that may be enough to secure a playoff berth depending on other results.

GT still in strong position but under pressure

Despite the loss, Gujarat Titans remain second on the table with 16 points from 13 matches. However, their margin for error has narrowed significantly.

A win in their final league game will confirm their place in the playoffs, but another slip could open the door for chasing teams.

Allen, Raghuvanshi power KKR to big total

KKR’s victory was built on a dominant batting display led by Finn Allen and Angkrish Raghuvanshi.

Allen smashed 93 off just 35 balls, including 10 sixes, while Raghuvanshi remained unbeaten on 82 off 44 deliveries. The duo added 95 runs in quick time, before Raghuvanshi stitched a 108-run partnership with Cameron Green (52*), propelling KKR to a formidable 247/2.

GT fall short despite strong chase

In response, GT posted 218/4, falling 29 runs short despite notable contributions from skipper Shubman Gill, who scored 85 off 49 balls, and Jos Buttler, who added 57 off 35.

Sai Sudharsan, who had briefly retired hurt, returned to score an unbeaten 53, but the target proved too steep.

With the ball, Sunil Narine led KKR’s effort with figures of 2/29, while Saurabh Dubey chipped in with a wicket.

Playoff race heats up

The result has significantly tightened the mid-table battle, with multiple teams now in contention for the remaining playoff spots. KKR’s resurgence, combined with GT’s stumble, ensures that the race to the top four will likely go down to the final round of league matches.

With momentum on their side, KKR have emerged as serious contenders, while GT must regroup quickly to avoid any late-season slip-ups.
