Bengaluru: Indian cricket star Virat Kohli has expressed concerns over the increasing presence of cameras and digital content coverage in the Indian Premier League, stating that excessive filming during training and personal interactions can affect a player’s comfort and preparation.
Speaking during the latest Royal Challengers Bengaluru podcast hosted by Mayanti Langer, Kohli reflected on the growing digital culture around cricket and the challenges athletes face in maintaining personal space amid constant content creation.
He said that while fan engagement and social media have become important aspects of the sport’s commercial ecosystem, boundaries need to be considered.
Kohli calls for balanced approach to content creation
Kohli stated that social media and fan engagement have become significant elements for teams and franchises, but felt there should be a better balance in how player access is managed.
According to him, the rapid expansion of franchise media content and official fan platforms has created situations where players are constantly under observation.
He noted that athletes may not always be comfortable with cameras following them during every aspect of training and preparation.
Kohli suggested that a more structured approach could help preserve the environment players require to prepare effectively.
Training environment should allow freedom, says Kohli
During the discussion, Kohli explained that constant filming at training sessions can create pressure and affect a player’s natural preparation process.
He said athletes need the freedom to work on different aspects of their game without every action becoming a topic of discussion or analysis.
Kohli observed that experimentation and adjustments made during training should not automatically become subjects of public scrutiny.
He stressed that performances should primarily be evaluated based on actual matches rather than activities taking place during practice sessions.
Kohli recalls interruption during conversation with Kane Williamson
Kohli also referred to a recent incident involving Kane Williamson and an AI-driven robotic dog known as “Champak”, which has been used as part of broadcast content initiatives.
He said he had been having a serious conversation with Williamson when the device approached and began drawing attention.
Kohli explained that he wanted uninterrupted space to speak with a long-time friend and colleague without the interaction becoming content material.
He noted that relationships built over years in cricket often require personal moments away from cameras and public attention.
Focus remains on performances on the field
Kohli said the challenge of balancing public attention and personal space has become increasingly difficult, particularly as interactions both on and off the field often become news topics.
He added that discussions with teammates or fellow players can quickly attract attention and create narratives beyond cricket itself.
Despite the discussion surrounding media attention, Kohli has continued to perform strongly in the tournament.
The senior batter recently returned to form with a record-extending ninth IPL century against Kolkata Knight Riders, helping Royal Challengers Bengaluru strengthen its position in the league standings.
