Massive crowds gathered around M Chinnaswamy Stadium during the IPL 2026 clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Lucknow Super Giants, causing traffic congestion, commuter inconvenience and a police crackdown in surrounding areas.
Fans began arriving hours before the evening fixture, leading to packed roads, crowded footpaths and long queues near entry gates. The stadium precinct witnessed a festive atmosphere, but the rush also disrupted regular city movement.
Cab and auto wait times surge
Commuters reported difficulty booking cabs and autorickshaws in central Bengaluru, with app-based wait times crossing 10 minutes. On normal days, rides are typically available within two to four minutes.
Several users also reported dynamic pricing due to increased demand near the stadium and adjoining commercial zones.
Police tighten security
Traffic police and law enforcement personnel increased checks around Cubbon Road, MG Road, Queen’s Road and nearby junctions to manage crowds and vehicle flow. Barricades were placed at several points to streamline pedestrian movement and prevent unauthorised parking.
Security measures were also stepped up at stadium gates, with bag checks and controlled access for ticket holders.
Match days now city-wide events
RCB home games increasingly create city-wide movement patterns, especially when marquee fixtures are scheduled. Restaurants, cafés and merchandise sellers around the stadium often see brisk business, while office commuters face delays.
Bengaluru has witnessed repeated calls for better public transport planning and dedicated event-day traffic management during major sporting fixtures.
Fans still turn up in huge numbers
Despite congestion and delays, thousands of supporters gathered in red jerseys, chanting for RCB and creating a carnival-like atmosphere outside the venue. For many, the inconvenience remains a small price for the IPL experience.
