Lucknow: India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan added a touch of humor after his brilliant innings against Afghanistan, jokingly accusing captain Shubman Gill of “costing him 70 runs” during their match-winning partnership in the second ODI.

Kishan played a sensational knock of 125 off just 79 balls as India thrashed Afghanistan by 170 runs to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

Massive partnership sets up India’s win

India were reduced to 96 for 2 after the early dismissal of Rohit Sharma when Kishan joined Gill at the crease. The duo then stitched together a dominant 224-run partnership off just 140 balls, completely taking the game away from Afghanistan.

Gill led from the front with a superb 154 off 110 deliveries, while Kishan’s aggressive strokeplay kept the scoreboard ticking at a rapid pace.

Kishan falls while going for hat-trick of sixes

Kishan’s innings was filled with attacking shots, including 14 fours and seven sixes, at a strike rate of over 158. He looked set for an even bigger score but was dismissed while attempting to hit a third consecutive six off spinner Nangeyalia Kharoti.

Having already smashed two back-to-back sixes, Kishan went for a third but was caught at deep mid-wicket, bringing an end to his explosive innings.

‘You reduced my 70 runs’ – Kishan jokes with Gill

After the match, Kishan was seen sharing a light-hearted moment with Gill, playfully blaming him for his dismissal.

“Mujhe chhe chhakke marwane mein mere 70 runs kam kar diye (You reduced my 70 runs in an attempt to get six sixes from me),” Kishan joked.

Gill responded with a smile, “Tujhe marna hi tha waise (You had to hit them anyway),” to which Kishan laughingly agreed, saying, “100 per cent.”

Simple approach key to success

Speaking about his innings, Kishan revealed that his approach was to keep things simple and build a strong partnership with Gill.

“To be very honest, I was just keeping it simple. The plan was to be in a good partnership when Gill was batting there. The wicket was good for batting, and we knew we could take on the bowlers at any point,” he said.

Trust in captain helped maintain composure

Kishan also highlighted how Gill’s presence helped him stay calm during crucial phases of the innings.

“The best part is you need to trust your leader always. There were times when I was rushing, but he kept telling me that there was enough time. He has that rhythm and understanding of the game,” Kishan added.

Conclusion

Ishan Kishan’s explosive knock and his entertaining camaraderie with Shubman Gill not only powered India to a massive win but also showcased the strong chemistry within the team. As India head into the final ODI, their batting form and team spirit remain key positives.
