Mumbai: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering advancing the Indian Premier League (IPL) schedule by nearly two weeks from the 2027 season onwards. The proposed move aims to minimise the impact of adverse weather conditions during the crucial playoff and final stages of the tournament.

Traditionally, the IPL begins in the final week of March and concludes in the last week of May. The 2026 edition followed a similar schedule, commencing on March 28 and ending with the final on May 31. However, the BCCI is now exploring the possibility of starting the tournament around March 10 and wrapping it up by May 15.

The proposed change comes as the league prepares to celebrate its 20th edition in 2027, with officials looking to ensure a smoother playing schedule for teams, players and spectators.

BCCI cites weather concerns behind proposed change

Speaking to PTI, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that discussions are underway within the board and the IPL Governing Council regarding a revised tournament window.

According to Saikia, one of the primary concerns is the increasing likelihood of rainfall and pre-monsoon activity during the latter half of May. Several IPL matches in recent seasons have faced interruptions due to changing weather conditions, particularly in southern and eastern parts of the country.

Apart from rain, the board is also concerned about extreme summer temperatures experienced across many Indian cities during May. High temperatures can affect player performance, spectator comfort and overall match-day experience.

Saikia said the board is assessing available scheduling windows and has instructed officials to explore the feasibility of beginning the tournament earlier while ensuring it concludes before adverse weather conditions become a major factor.

IPL 2027 could begin around March 10

Under the proposed plan, IPL 2027 could start nearly three weeks earlier than its traditional schedule.

The BCCI believes an earlier start would allow the entire tournament, including playoffs and the final, to be completed by May 15. This would significantly reduce the risk of weather-related disruptions and provide a more predictable schedule for franchises, broadcasters and fans.

The proposal is currently under discussion and no final decision has been announced. However, the board appears keen to explore options that can enhance the tournament’s operational efficiency while maintaining its commercial and sporting appeal.

The revised schedule would also align with the increasing demands of the international cricket calendar, which continues to become more crowded with bilateral series, ICC tournaments and franchise leagues worldwide.

Expansion has increased scheduling challenges

Scheduling the IPL has become more complex since the addition of two new franchises in 2022.

With the introduction of Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants, the league expanded to 10 teams. As a result, the number of league-stage matches increased to 70, while the overall tournament now consists of 74 matches, including the playoffs.

The expanded format requires a longer tournament window, making weather considerations even more important. Any disruptions during the closing stages can have significant implications for travel, broadcasting schedules and competitive balance.

An earlier start date could provide greater flexibility in accommodating the larger number of fixtures while reducing the risk of rain-affected matches.

RCB set to defend title in IPL 2027

Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will enter IPL 2027 as the defending champions.

Led by Rajat Patidar, RCB successfully retained their title by defeating Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2026 final. The victory followed their historic maiden title triumph in 2025, ending a long wait for the franchise and its supporters.

Star batter Virat Kohli played a crucial role in the 2026 final, producing an unbeaten knock of 75 runs from just 42 deliveries as RCB chased down a target of 156 with ease, securing victory in 18 overs.

The achievement placed RCB alongside Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings as franchises that have successfully defended an IPL title.

With momentum firmly on their side, Bengaluru will be aiming to create further history when the landmark 20th edition of the tournament gets underway in 2027.

Decision expected after further discussions

The proposal to advance the IPL schedule remains under review, with discussions expected to continue between the BCCI and the IPL Governing Council in the coming months.

If approved, the change would mark one of the most significant scheduling adjustments in the league’s history. It would reflect the board’s efforts to adapt to changing weather patterns, growing tournament demands and player welfare considerations.

As the IPL continues to evolve into one of the world’s premier sporting competitions, ensuring favourable playing conditions throughout the tournament is likely to remain a top priority for administrators.

The final decision on the IPL 2027 schedule is expected once the board completes its assessment of available windows and logistical requirements.
