Australian cricketer Matt Renshaw has earned a spot in the 15-man one-day squad for the upcoming series against India, marking just the second time in his career he has been selected for a 50-over series.
Renshaw, a left-handed batsman who debuted in Test cricket in 2016, has evolved from a gritty opener to a dependable middle-order batsman in white-ball cricket. He was previously named in a white-ball squad in 2022 but did not feature in the playing XI.
Form and Focus Key to Recall
Fresh off a Sheffield Shield century for Queensland, Renshaw credited his run of form to focusing on enjoying the game.
“It’s hard – you have to get rid of a lot of things, external noise, off your phone and stuff, but I just want to try and go out there and play,” he said.
“I know that when I’m doing my job for Queensland, opening the batting well, we’re generally winning games.”
“If you told 12-year-old Matt that he was going to score a Sheffield Shield hundred, he’d be pretty pumped.”
Squad composition and selections
Renshaw’s inclusion comes as Marnus Labuschagne, a Test regular, has been axed from the one-day squad. For both the ODI and initial T20 matches against India, only two Test regulars – Josh Hazlewood and Travis Head – have been included.
Other notable selections and changes:
- Alex Carey, who played in the recent New Zealand tour, missed the first ODI due to Sheffield Shield commitments.
- Cameron Green is included only in the 50-over matches.
- Glenn Maxwell was excluded after breaking his arm in training last week.
National selection chief George Bailey explained:
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series to balance preparation for the World Cup and the upcoming Ashes.”
Leadership and team composition
Mitchell Marsh will captain both teams following his historic innings at Bay Oval against New Zealand. The ODI squad for the India series includes:
ODI squad: Mitchell Marsh (c), Xavier Bartlett, Alex Carey, Cooper Connolly, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Mitchell Owen, Matthew Renshaw, Matthew Short, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa
T20I squad (first two games): Mitchell Marsh (c), Sean Abbott, Xavier Bartlett, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Mitchell Owen, Matthew Short, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa
Renshaw’s inclusion reflects his resurgence in domestic cricket and adds depth to Australia’s middle-order batting, as the team prepares for a challenging white-ball series against India ahead of the 2026 ICC World Cup.
