MUMBAI: With the IPL 2026 auction expected to be held in mid-December, teams are gearing up to release their list of retained players by November 15. Amid the buzz, rumours swirled that Rohit Sharma might leave Mumbai Indians (MI) for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). However, Mumbai Indians have seemingly put those whispers to rest with a clever post on X (formerly Twitter).
The franchise wrote, “Sun will rise tomorrow again ye toh confirm hai, but at (K)night… mushkil hi nahi, namumkin hai,” implying that Rohit’s shift to KKR is “not only tough, but impossible.” The witty emphasis on “(K)night” — a nod to Kolkata Knight Riders — was a clear and indirect response to the rumours that had been circulating on social media.
The post came on the same day that Abhishek Nayar, Rohit Sharma’s long-time friend and personal batting mentor, was announced as KKR’s new head coach.
Abhishek Nayar named KKR head coach
Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday officially appointed Abhishek Nayar as their head coach, succeeding Chandrakant Pandit, who completed a three-season stint with the franchise.
Nayar, who has been a part of KKR’s setup since 2018, is regarded as one of the most influential members of their backroom staff. He has been instrumental in the development of several KKR players and is known for his deep involvement in player management and strategy discussions.
“Abhishek has been a vital part of the Knight Riders setup since 2018, shaping our players both on and off the field. His understanding of the game and connection with players have been key to our growth. We’re thrilled to see him take over as Head Coach and lead KKR into its next chapter,” said Venky Mysore, CEO of Kolkata Knight Riders.
From mentor to head coach
Nayar’s promotion marks a natural progression in his coaching career. Over the years, he has worked closely with senior and junior players alike, providing technical and mental support. His reputation as a personal mentor extends beyond KKR — he has trained and guided some of India’s leading cricketers, including Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Dinesh Karthik.
Notably, Nayar was also credited with discovering and grooming Angkrish Raghuvanshi, one of the brightest young prospects in Indian cricket.
A former India international, Nayar played three ODIs for the national team but made his mark as a domestic stalwart for Mumbai, known for his consistency and leadership in the Ranji Trophy.
Stint with Team India and recent transition
For nearly nine months, Nayar was part of Gautam Gambhir’s coaching staff in the Indian national team setup. However, following India’s Champions Trophy triumph, Nayar was unexpectedly relieved of his duties, with Sitanshu Kotak replacing him as assistant coach.
His return to the IPL circuit as KKR’s head coach marks a major step forward for the 43-year-old, who is widely respected for his analytical approach and empathetic leadership style.
Mumbai Indians’ statement puts rumours to rest
While Nayar’s appointment fuelled online chatter about Rohit Sharma’s possible move to KKR — given the duo’s close bond — Mumbai Indians’ humorous post has effectively shut down the speculation.
Rohit, who led MI to five IPL titles, remains one of the league’s most successful captains. The post from the franchise’s official handle indicates that the veteran opener is set to continue with Mumbai Indians in the upcoming season.
Fans were quick to react, flooding social media with celebratory posts and memes. “Captain stays! Mumbai till I die,” one fan wrote, while another commented, “MI just confirmed it in the most Bollywood way possible!”
What lies ahead
With the IPL 2026 mega auction drawing near, all 10 franchises are working on their retention strategies. Speculation is rife about player transfers and captaincy changes, but Mumbai Indians’ message makes one thing clear — Rohit Sharma is unlikely to be part of any major reshuffle.
The focus now shifts to the official retention list, which will provide clarity on each team’s composition ahead of what is expected to be a high-stakes auction in December.
