New Delhi: Delhi Capitals head coach Hemang Badani admitted that key decisions and underwhelming individual performances cost his side dearly in their loss to Chennai Super Kings, leaving their playoff hopes hanging by a thread in the Indian Premier League 2026 season.

Top-order collapse proves decisive

Delhi’s innings never recovered after a disastrous start on a tricky surface at Arun Jaitley Stadium. The Capitals slumped early, managing just around 70 for 5 in the first 10 overs, a phase Badani believes effectively decided the contest.

“You don’t want to be 70 for 5, even on a tough surface. The game was lost in the first 10 overs,” he said.

Despite the pitch offering grip and assistance to spinners, Delhi’s batters failed to adapt, exposing ongoing issues with consistency at the top.

“No control over pitch” call

One of the major talking points was the decision to bat first after winning the toss. In hindsight, it appeared to backfire as CSK benefited from knowing the conditions while chasing.

Badani, however, made it clear that franchises have no say in pitch preparation, even at their home venues.

“We don’t have any control over the surfaces. It’s easier for a side to field first, assess conditions, and then bat,” he explained.

He also highlighted the unpredictable nature of Delhi pitches this season, pointing out how the same venue has produced vastly different totals — from high-scoring games to low, tricky contests.

Concern over Kuldeep’s form

The form of Kuldeep Yadav has become a growing concern. The left-arm wrist spinner endured another tough outing, conceding 34 runs in three overs without a wicket.

Badani acknowledged the dip but backed the experienced bowler to bounce back:

“We would ideally want Kuldeep to be better… it’s about someone striking form. He hasn’t hit peak rhythm yet.”

Despite the struggles, the management remains committed to him, banking on his experience.

Axar’s struggles add to worries

Captain Axar Patel is also going through a lean patch, particularly with the bat. However, Badani refused to single him out.

“It’s not about one person. As a team, we need to play better cricket.”

He emphasised that experienced players like Axar, a multiple ICC tournament winner, deserve continued backing rather than criticism.

Playoff equation: must-win territory

With the loss, Delhi’s path to the playoffs has become steep. Badani laid it out clearly:

  • 🏏 4 matches remaining
  • Must win all four to stay in contention

Anything less would likely end their campaign.

Bigger picture

The Capitals’ season now hinges on:

  • Finding top-order stability
  • Regaining spin effectiveness
  • Making better tactical calls at the toss

While Badani defended the uncontrollable factors like pitch conditions, he was candid that execution on the field must improve immediately.
