Lahore: Pakistan national cricket team head coach Mike Hesson has termed the upcoming ODI series against Australia national cricket team as a crucial testing ground for his side ahead of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027.

The three-match ODI series, scheduled between May 30 and June 4 in Rawalpindi and Lahore, is expected to play a significant role in shaping Pakistan’s preparations for the global showpiece event, which is just over a year away.

Series to test Pakistan’s bench strength

Speaking ahead of the series, Hesson emphasised that the contests against Australia will provide an opportunity to assess both experienced players and emerging talent under pressure.

Pakistan have announced a 16-member squad, to be led by pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi. The squad sees the return of several key players, including Babar Azam, Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah, Shadab Khan, and Sufyan Moqim, all of whom had missed the ODI series against Bangladesh earlier this year.

At the same time, the selectors have included three uncapped players — Ahmed Daniyal, Arafat Minhas, and Rohail Nazir — signalling an intent to expand the player pool and build depth ahead of the World Cup.

Australia expected to pose strong challenge

Hesson acknowledged that Australia would be formidable opponents, particularly in the ODI format. He noted that the visitors would be eager to make amends for previous performances and are likely to field a strong squad.

According to the coach, Australia’s strength in one-day cricket makes them an ideal benchmark for Pakistan as they look to fine-tune their combinations and strategies.

The conditions in Rawalpindi and Lahore are expected to provide competitive pitches, offering a balanced contest between bat and ball, further enhancing the value of the series as a preparatory exercise.

ODI setup still a work in progress

Hesson admitted that Pakistan’s ODI unit is still evolving and requires careful planning over the next 12–18 months. He stressed the importance of rotating players and providing opportunities to a wider group, rather than relying on a fixed set of names.

The coach highlighted that building a strong bench and addressing key areas — including middle-order stability and bowling consistency — will be essential to assembling a competitive squad for the 2027 World Cup.

He reiterated that the management’s focus is on long-term development rather than short-term results, even as the team competes in high-profile series.

Patience key for young players

With several young players included in the squad, Hesson called for patience from fans and stakeholders. He pointed out that transitioning to international cricket can be challenging, and not all players will succeed immediately.

The inclusion of fresh faces is part of a broader strategy to identify and nurture talent capable of performing on the big stage. Hesson stressed that consistent exposure and support will be critical in helping these players realise their potential.

Notable absentees due to injury

Pakistan will be without key batters Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub, both of whom are currently recovering from injuries.

Their absence opens up opportunities for other players to step up and stake their claim for a place in the World Cup squad. It also allows the team management to test alternative combinations at the top of the order.

Series schedule

The ODI series will be played as follows:

  • First ODI: May 30 – Rawalpindi
  • Second ODI: June 2 – Lahore
  • Third ODI: June 4 – Lahore

The matches are expected to attract significant attention, given the stakes involved and the quality of the two sides.

Conclusion

As Pakistan gear up for a crucial phase in their ODI journey, the series against Australia offers more than just immediate results. It represents a vital opportunity to evaluate talent, refine strategies, and build a squad capable of competing at the highest level.

With a mix of experienced players and emerging prospects, Pakistan will aim to strike the right balance while gaining valuable insights ahead of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027. The outcomes of this series could play a defining role in shaping the team’s roadmap for the global tournament.
