Mullanpur: Lucknow Super Giants skipper Rishabh Pant has explained the reasoning behind his team’s bold opening experiment despite a heavy 54-run defeat to Punjab Kings in IPL 2026.

Pant revealed that promoting Ayush Badoni to open the innings was not a last-minute decision but part of a pre-planned strategy aimed at giving the top order more freedom.

Pre-planned strategy behind opening move

Chasing a daunting target of 255, LSG opted to send Badoni to open alongside Mitchell Marsh, replacing Aiden Markram at the top.

Pant clarified that the move was designed to inject intent early in the innings and ease pressure on the middle order.

“The idea was to go out there and play freely. It was pre-decided, not something we decided today,” Pant said after the match.

He added that the team wanted the top order to play with greater attacking freedom, allowing the middle order to contribute more effectively.

Mixed performance with positives

Despite the loss, Pant chose to focus on the positives rather than pinpointing a single reason for the defeat.

He acknowledged that while the bowlers have generally performed well, there are still areas that require improvement. At the same time, he noted encouraging signs from the batting unit.

“There were some positives for us also to work around. There was a glimpse of batting, which we talked about,” Pant said, emphasising the importance of building consistency.

Strong start but steep chase

LSG got off to a promising start with a 61-run opening partnership between Badoni (35 off 21 balls) and Marsh (40 off 28 balls). The aggressive approach aligned with the team’s strategy of playing freely at the top.

Pant himself contributed a quick 43 off 23 balls, attempting to keep the chase alive.

However, the required run rate continued to climb, and regular wickets prevented LSG from mounting a serious challenge.

PBKS dominate with bat

Punjab Kings’ victory was built on a dominant batting display. Priyansh Arya smashed 93 off 37 balls, while Cooper Connolly added 87 off 46 deliveries.

Their 182-run partnership powered PBKS to 254/7 — the highest total of IPL 2026 so far.

The bowlers then complemented the effort by restricting LSG to 200/5, sealing a comprehensive win.

Points table scenario

Punjab Kings continue to lead the standings as the only unbeaten side, with five wins and one no-result, taking them to 11 points.

Lucknow Super Giants, meanwhile, remain in eighth position with two wins and four losses, as they look to regain momentum in the tournament.

Focus on improvement

Pant reiterated that the team is focused on improving collectively rather than dwelling on setbacks. He stressed the importance of learning from each match and delivering consistent performances going forward.

The skipper’s calm and analytical approach reflects LSG’s intent to stay positive despite recent defeats.

Conclusion

While the opening gamble did not produce the desired result, Rishabh Pant’s explanation highlights a broader tactical approach aimed at long-term improvement. As IPL 2026 progresses, LSG will look to refine their strategies and convert promising performances into victories.
