Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again expressed India’s commitment to hosting the 2036 Olympic Games, emphasizing the transformative potential the event holds for Indian sports. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 38th National Games in Dehradun on Tuesday, Modi highlighted the significant benefits that hosting the Olympics would bring to the nation. “We are making every effort to secure the hosting rights for the 2036 Olympics, which will take Indian sports to new heights,” Modi stated.
The Prime Minister pointed out that the Olympic Games would not only elevate athletic achievements but also improve facilities across various sectors. “The Olympics bring widespread benefits to every sector and significantly enhance facilities for athletes,” he added.
India’s official interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics was first made public by Modi during the 2023 International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Mumbai. Following this, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) formally submitted its expression of interest to the IOC.
Modi reaffirmed his government’s commitment to sports, underscoring their role in national development. “We are dedicated to empowering your potential and ensuring you receive the support you need. Sports are integral to our vision for the nation’s progress,” he said.
The Prime Minister also praised the National Games for symbolizing the unity and diversity of India, referring to them as “a beautiful portrait of ‘Ek Bharat, Sreshth Bharat.'”
