Raipur: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) moved a step closer to securing a playoff berth in IPL 2026 after a commanding six-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), powered by a unbeaten century from Virat Kohli. The victory has pushed RCB to the top of the points table, while KKR now find themselves on the brink of elimination.
Kohli’s century powers RCB to the top
Virat Kohli returned to form in emphatic fashion, scoring an unbeaten 105 off 60 balls to anchor RCB’s successful chase of 193. The 37-year-old, who had registered back-to-back ducks in previous matches, silenced critics with his ninth IPL century, laced with 11 boundaries and three sixes.
RCB chased down the target with composure, reaching the total with six wickets in hand. Kohli played a central role, guiding the innings after early setbacks and ensuring there were no late hiccups.
He stitched a crucial 92-run partnership with Devdutt Padikkal, who contributed 39 runs, stabilising the innings after the early dismissal of Jacob Bethell for 15. Kohli, who was dropped on 21, capitalised on the opportunity and brought up his half-century in 32 balls before accelerating further.
Despite losing Padikkal, skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and Tim David in quick succession — the latter falling to a stunning one-handed catch by Manish Pandey — Kohli held his nerve. Wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma eventually hit the winning runs to seal the victory.
Updated qualification scenario
With this win, RCB have registered their eighth victory in 12 matches, taking their tally to 16 points. Historically, 16 points are considered sufficient to qualify for the IPL playoffs, putting RCB in a strong position to advance to the next stage.
Their superior net run rate has helped them climb to the top of the 10-team table, overtaking Gujarat Titans. While qualification is not yet mathematically sealed, RCB now have one foot firmly in the playoffs.
On the other hand, KKR’s situation has become precarious. The three-time champions have suffered their sixth defeat in 11 matches and can now reach a maximum of 15 points even if they win all their remaining games.
This leaves their playoff hopes hanging by a thread, as they would need favourable results from other teams to stay in contention.
Kolkata’s innings: A competitive total
Earlier in the match, KKR posted a competitive 192/4, thanks largely to a well-crafted 71 off 46 balls by Angkrish Raghuvanshi. The young batter anchored the innings and built key partnerships to propel the total.
He added valuable runs alongside Cameron Green, who scored 32, and later combined effectively with Rinku Singh, who provided a strong finish with an unbeaten 49 off 29 balls.
Despite the solid total, KKR’s bowling unit struggled to contain RCB’s batting lineup, especially Kohli, who dictated the pace of the chase.
RCB’s bowling effort saw contributions from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Josh Hazlewood and Rasikh Salam, each picking up a wicket to keep KKR under the 200-run mark.
Playoff race intensifies
As the league stage approaches its final phase, the race for the top four spots is becoming increasingly competitive. The top four teams in the points table will qualify for the playoffs, with the IPL 2026 final scheduled to be held in Ahmedabad on May 31.
RCB’s consistent performances have put them in a favourable position, while teams like KKR now face an uphill battle to remain in contention.
With just a few matches left, net run rate, head-to-head results and consistency under pressure will play a crucial role in determining the final standings.

Conclusion
RCB’s victory not only boosts their playoff chances but also highlights their strong form at a crucial stage of the tournament. Virat Kohli’s return to peak form adds significant momentum to their campaign.
For KKR, however, the defeat could prove costly. With limited matches remaining and a lower maximum points ceiling, their path to the playoffs now depends heavily on other results.
As IPL 2026 heads towards its business end, every match is set to have a decisive impact on the final playoff lineup.
