New Delhi, October 9, 2025: In the aftermath of a crushing innings and 140-run loss to India in the first Test in Ahmedabad, West Indies captain Roston Chase addressed his team’s prospects for a turnaround. With the second Test scheduled to begin at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, Chase remains optimistic about his team’s potential to bounce back.
“Obviously, we are down right now, but it has to change at some point, and the change can start from now,” Chase stated. “But it starts with the belief and the mindset of each and every player, and just keep motivating the guys that we can still play some positive cricket.”
The West Indies’ performance in Ahmedabad was underwhelming, with scores of 162 and 146 in their two innings. Their top scores were modest, with Justin Greaves and Alick Athanaze contributing 30-plus runs in the first and second innings, respectively. A 46-run partnership between Greaves and Athanaze in the second innings was a rare bright spot, but ultimately, it wasn’t enough to make a dent in India’s massive total of 448 for 5, which featured three century-makers.
Chase’s call for a positive mindset is bolstered by support from West Indies cricket legends. Viv Richards, Brian Lara, and Richie Richardson, all of whom were in Delhi ahead of the second Test, met with Chase and encouraged him to maintain belief in the team’s abilities. “They told me to keep believing — we may be down at the moment, but things will change,” Chase revealed.
As the West Indies prepare for the second Test, Chase’s leadership and the team’s resolve will be crucial in determining their response to the challenges posed by India.
