New Delhi: The exclusion of Sanju Samson from India’s T20I squad for the upcoming Zimbabwe tour has sparked debate among cricket fans, but sources close to the selection process have clarified that the wicketkeeper-batter has been rested rather than dropped. According to reports, Samson’s absence is linked to workload management and his inclusion in India’s squad for the upcoming Asian Games, with selectors preferring to give opportunities to younger players during the three-match series.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a 15-member squad led by Shreyas Iyer for the Zimbabwe tour, with Prabhsimran Singh replacing Samson as the designated wicketkeeper-batter.
Sanju Samson’s omission raises questions
Sanju Samson’s name was among the most notable absentees when India’s T20I squad for the Zimbabwe series was announced. The Kerala batter, who played a key role in India’s T20 World Cup 2026 triumph and was named Player of the Tournament, was expected to feature in the squad.
However, the selectors opted to leave him out, prompting widespread criticism on social media.
Samson is currently part of India’s white-ball setup and had also enjoyed a productive IPL 2026 campaign, scoring two centuries during the season. Despite those performances, the selectors decided against including him for the Zimbabwe tour.
Selectors explain the decision
According to a senior source quoted by PTI, Samson has not been dropped but rested, considering his upcoming commitments with the Indian team.
The source said critics should “do a bit of homework” before questioning the decision, pointing out that Samson is already part of India’s squad for the Asian Games scheduled later this year.
The source added that carrying a senior player on the Zimbabwe tour without guaranteeing him a place in the playing XI would have served little purpose, especially when the management wants to provide valuable international exposure to emerging cricketers.
The move is also seen as part of India’s long-term squad planning ahead of future ICC tournaments.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi earns extended opportunity
One of the biggest stories surrounding India’s recent T20I selections has been the emergence of teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
The youngster replaced Samson in the playing XI during the second T20I against England in Manchester, becoming India’s youngest-ever international cricketer and surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record.
Samson struggled during the recent series, registering three low scores across matches against Ireland and England, which opened the door for the talented left-handed batter.
The selectors appear keen to provide Sooryavanshi with an extended run in international cricket as India begins preparing its next generation of T20 stars.
Prabhsimran Singh returns to the national squad
Samson’s place in the Zimbabwe squad has gone to Punjab Kings wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh.
The aggressive opener impressed during IPL 2026 with several impactful performances and has previously represented India during the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou.
His selection reflects the team’s intention to test backup wicketkeeping options while rotating senior players during a relatively short bilateral series.
Prabhsimran will compete with Ishan Kishan for opportunities behind the stumps during the three matches in Harare.
Other notable omissions
Apart from Samson, several other players involved in India’s recent international assignments have also been left out.
Fast bowlers Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana, all-rounder Washington Sundar, left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh and leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi were omitted from the T20I squad.
Among them, Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna and Washington Sundar are part of India’s ODI squad for the upcoming series against England, explaining their absence from the Zimbabwe tour.
Meanwhile, Rinku Singh and express pacer Mayank Yadav have earned recalls after recovering from injuries and returning to competitive cricket.
India aim to test bench strength
The Zimbabwe tour offers another opportunity for India to assess its bench strength while giving younger players valuable international exposure.
Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, the team includes a healthy mix of experienced campaigners and emerging talents, with Tilak Varma serving as vice-captain.
With several senior players being rested ahead of a packed international calendar, the selectors appear focused on building depth across all departments.
India will play three T20 Internationals against Zimbabwe in Harare on July 23, 25 and 27.
India’s T20I squad: Shreyas Iyer (Captain), Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma (Vice-Captain), Ishan Kishan (WK), Shivam Dube, Suryansh Shedge, Rinku Singh, Harsh Dubey, Varun Chakravarthy, Prince Yadav, Yash Thakur, Ashok Sharma, Mayank Yadav and Prabhsimran Singh (WK).
Conclusion
While Sanju Samson’s absence initially surprised many fans, the decision appears to be part of India’s broader workload management and squad rotation strategy. With the Asian Games approaching and several young players knocking on the door, the Zimbabwe series presents an ideal platform for the selectors to evaluate emerging talent without compromising long-term planning.
