Even as the blockbuster Sanju Samson trade involving Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals dominates cricket discussions, another notable player exchange — albeit quieter — is reportedly in the works.

According to a Cricbuzz report, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Mumbai Indians (MI) are engaged in advanced discussions involving Shardul Thakur and Arjun Tendulkar. While this move is being talked about as a potential trade, sources suggest the deal might actually comprise two independent, all-cash transfers rather than a formal player-for-player swap.

Franchise discussions in advanced stage

As per the rules of the Indian Premier League (IPL), any player trade or transfer must be officially announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). However, insiders from the Mumbai cricket circuit confirmed that discussions between the two franchises are ongoing and a formal announcement could arrive soon — possibly alongside the official player retention and release list on November 15.

While both players appear poised to switch franchises, the exact financial details or the total value of the transfers have not been disclosed.

Shardul Thakur’s journey with Lucknow Super Giants

Shardul Thakur, currently leading Mumbai in domestic cricket, joined LSG as a replacement player for his base price of ₹2 crore before the start of the last IPL season. Despite going unsold during the mega auction in Jeddah last year, Thakur delivered a decent bowling performance for Lucknow, taking 13 wickets in 10 matches.

He was frequently used with the new ball, often opening the attack and maintaining consistent line and length. However, his batting contribution remained modest, scoring just 18 runs during the season.

Arjun Tendulkar’s stint with Mumbai Indians

Arjun Tendulkar, son of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, has been part of the Mumbai Indians setup for two seasons. Picked at his base price of ₹20 lakh, the 26-year-old left-arm all-rounder has featured in five IPL matches across two seasons, scoring 13 runs and claiming three wickets.

Though he didn’t play in IPL 2025, Tendulkar represented Goa in domestic cricket after moving from Mumbai a couple of years ago. Since then, he has played 21 first-class matches, developing his bowling rhythm and fitness. Despite his efforts, breaking into MI’s star-studded playing XI has remained a challenge.

What’s next?

While neither franchise has issued an official statement, sources indicate that both transfers are nearing completion and could be confirmed once the BCCI finalises the trade window list.

If completed, this will mark yet another busy pre-season period, as franchises look to rebalance their squads ahead of the IPL 2026 auction.
