New Delhi: New Zealand kept their Women’s T20 World Cup campaign alive with a composed six-wicket win over Scotland, overcoming early setbacks before a match-winning partnership between Izzy Sharp and Brooke Halliday sealed victory.

Facing a virtual knockout clash, New Zealand opted to field first after winning the toss. Scotland, however, put up a spirited performance, led by Darcey Carter’s outstanding unbeaten 72 off 52 balls. She anchored the innings as wickets fell around her, with support from Katherine Fraser and Sarah Bryce helping Scotland reach 96 for 2 in the 15th over.

Late collapse dents Scotland

Despite a strong platform, Scotland faltered in the final overs. New Zealand staged a superb comeback, with Sophie Devine picking up two crucial wickets before Amelia Kerr delivered an excellent spell at the death, finishing with figures of 3 for 17.

Scotland eventually posted 131 for 7, losing five wickets for just 35 runs in the closing stages, which prevented them from reaching a more competitive total.

Scotland strike early in chase

Scotland made an immediate impact with the ball. Kathryn Bryce struck early to remove Amelia Kerr and later dismissed Isabella Gaze, while Rachel Slater bowled Sophie Devine to leave New Zealand struggling at 31 for 3 in the PowerPlay.

With the defending champions under pressure, the match hung in the balance.

Sharp-Halliday partnership turns game

Izzy Sharp and Brooke Halliday then steadied the innings with a calm and calculated approach. The duo focused on rotating the strike and capitalising on loose deliveries, gradually shifting momentum in New Zealand’s favour.

Sharp led the charge with a confident and aggressive innings, showcasing her range against both spin and pace. She brought up her maiden T20I half-century, scoring a crucial 62 that anchored the chase.

Halliday provided excellent support, initially playing a steady role before accelerating when needed. Her unbeaten 41 ensured New Zealand stayed ahead of the required rate.

The pair added a match-defining 100-run partnership, effectively ending Scotland’s hopes. Although Slater eventually dismissed Sharp, the result was all but decided.

New Zealand seal crucial win

New Zealand completed the chase in 18.2 overs, finishing at 132 for 4 and securing a six-wicket victory with 10 balls to spare.

Scotland bow out with positives

Despite the defeat, Scotland showed significant progress throughout the tournament. Carter’s unbeaten knock and Bryce’s early breakthroughs highlighted their growing competitiveness on the global stage.

However, their inability to maintain pressure in the middle overs and capitalise on key moments proved costly once again.

Campaign stays alive for White Ferns

For New Zealand, the victory keeps their semifinal hopes alive after an inconsistent start to the tournament. The bowlers’ recovery and the composed partnership between Sharp and Halliday provided the stability the team needed.

With qualification still within reach, the defending champions now have another opportunity to push for a place in the knockout stages.
