Harare: Shreyas Iyer scripted a memorable milestone as captain by breaking a unique record previously held by MS Dhoni, even as India registered a dominant win over Zimbabwe in the opening T20I of the three-match series.
After seven matches without a victory, Iyer finally celebrated his first win as India’s T20I captain, leading the team to a comfortable seven-wicket triumph. The win came in emphatic fashion, with India chasing down a modest target of 126 in just 13.2 overs.
Iyer sets new world record with toss streak
In a remarkable statistical achievement, Iyer became the first captain in men’s T20 International cricket to win the toss in each of his first eight matches. He surpassed the previous record of seven consecutive toss wins held by Bahamas skipper Gregory Taylor.
Among Indian captains, Dhoni had earlier set the benchmark with seven consecutive toss wins between May 2010 and February 2012. Iyer’s feat now places him at the top globally in this unique category.
Young Sooryavanshi shines in record chase
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi emerged as the standout performer with the bat, smashing a sensational maiden half-century off just 18 balls. The 15-year-old prodigy scored 50 runs in a blistering knock that set the tone for India’s successful chase.
Ishan Kishan contributed a brisk 35, while captain Iyer remained unbeaten on 28 alongside Tilak Varma, guiding the team home with ease.
Bowlers set up victory with disciplined effort
Earlier, India’s bowling unit delivered a clinical performance to restrict Zimbabwe to 125/7 after Iyer opted to field first.
Pacer Mayank Yadav led the attack with impressive figures of 2/18, dismissing key batters Brian Bennett and Dion Myers. He was well supported by Prince Yadav, who claimed 2/19.
Spinners Ravi Bishnoi and all-rounder Shivam Dube chipped in with a wicket each, ensuring Zimbabwe never built momentum.
For the hosts, Tadiwanashe Marumani top-scored with an unbeaten 39, but lacked support from the other end.
Iyer reflects on first win as captain
Speaking after the match, Iyer expressed relief and happiness at securing his first victory as captain after a difficult start that included series losses to Ireland and England.
He praised the team’s execution, particularly highlighting Mayank Yadav’s disciplined bowling and Sooryavanshi’s fearless batting.
“Exceptional. They were tremendous in their execution. Can’t be happier to get my first win. Vaibhav came out and gave us an exceptional start. He is fearless and possesses immense confidence,” Iyer said.

Mayank Yadav was adjudged Player of the Match for his impactful spell. He described the performance as a special moment and credited the pitch conditions for assisting his bowling.
“It always feels great when you contribute to a win. The bounce and seam movement really helped me. It was my first time playing here, and I enjoyed bowling in these conditions,” he said.
