Dubai: India captain Shubman Gill has climbed three places to become the world’s No. 2-ranked ODI batter in the latest ICC rankings released on Wednesday, moving ahead of former India captain Virat Kohli.
Fresh from leading India to his first ODI series victory as captain, Gill now has 791 rating points and is just 24 points behind New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell, who occupies the top spot in the ODI batting rankings.
The latest rankings update comes after an impressive series for the Indian skipper, whose consistent performances with the bat have further cemented his place among the world’s leading white-ball players.
Ishan Kishan makes massive gains
India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan also enjoyed a significant rise in the rankings following his performances in the three-match ODI series.
Kishan surged 21 places to reach 43rd in the ODI batting rankings after a string of consistent scores.
The latest rankings reflect India’s strong performances in recent limited-overs cricket and underline the growing influence of the country’s younger batting stars.
Meanwhile, Kohli, who missed the three-match series due to injury, slipped behind Gill in the rankings.
Joe Root returns to top of Test rankings
In Test cricket, England batter Joe Root reclaimed the No. 1 position in the ICC Test batting rankings, dethroning teammate Harry Brook.
Root recently became only the second batter in the history of Test cricket to surpass 14,000 runs, behind Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar.
The England veteran is now closing in on Tendulkar’s all-time Test run record and continues to enhance his legacy as one of the modern era’s finest batters.
Indian bowlers climb rankings
India’s clean sweep against Afghanistan also resulted in significant gains for several bowlers in the ICC ODI rankings.
Fast bowler Arshdeep Singh climbed 16 places to 22nd in the ODI bowling rankings.
Pacer Prasidh Krishna jumped 34 spots to joint 58th, while all-rounder Washington Sundar moved up 17 positions to joint 71st.
The gains underline India’s growing bowling depth ahead of a busy international calendar.
Matt Henry joins Bumrah at the top
There was also a major change in the ICC Men’s Test bowling rankings following New Zealand’s victory over England in the second Test.
New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry climbed to the top of the Test bowling rankings after claiming 11 wickets in the match.
The 34-year-old now shares the No. 1 ranking with India’s premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah.
Bumrah had held the top spot outright since overtaking South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada in November 2024.
Henry’s remarkable performance not only helped New Zealand level the three-match Test series against England at 1-1 but also earned him a place among an elite group of New Zealand cricketers.
He became only the third New Zealander after Jack Cowie and legendary all-rounder Richard Hadlee to reach the top of the ICC Test bowling rankings.
Henry’s current rating of 870 points is among the highest achieved by a New Zealand player in Test cricket. Only Hadlee, who reached 909 points in 1985, and former captain Kane Williamson, who achieved 919 batting points in 2021, have recorded higher ICC ratings.
Gill eyes top ranking
With just 24 rating points separating him from the top spot, Gill now has an excellent opportunity to become the world’s No. 1 ODI batter in the coming months.
The latest rankings update reflects India’s strong performances across formats and highlights the emergence of a new generation of cricketers making their mark on the international stage.
