As anticipation builds for the high-stakes India–Pakistan encounter, Pakistan’s mystery spinner Usman Tariq has become a major talking point.
Tariq’s journey to the international stage is as dramatic as his bowling action. Once a salesman in the UAE, he reportedly decided to pursue cricket seriously after watching M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story. Inspired by MS Dhoni’s decision to leave his railway job and follow his passion, Tariq quit his job in Dubai and returned to Pakistan to focus on the sport.
The ‘X-factor’ with a quirky action
Now described by captain Salman Ali Agha as Pakistan’s “X-factor”, Tariq’s stop-start run-up and slinging action have unsettled batters. His ability to vary pace subtly — delivering one ball significantly slower and the next slightly quicker with turn — has added to the intrigue.
In a recent match against the USA, Tariq returned figures of 3-27, playing a decisive role in Pakistan’s defence. On slower tracks like the R. Premadasa Stadium, where India and Pakistan are set to meet, his style could prove even more effective.
Debate over bowling action
Questions have been raised in some quarters about the legality of his action. However, veteran India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin publicly supported Tariq, while former India batter WV Raman suggested that the perceived awkwardness stems more from rhythm disruption than illegality.
Raman noted that Indian players are familiar with unconventional bowling styles, citing part-time options like Kedar Jadhav and Riyan Parag.
With Pakistan likely to field multiple spinners including Mohammed Nawaz, Abrar Ahmed and Shadab Khan, India’s renowned spin-hitters will need to adapt quickly.
As the blockbuster clash approaches, Tariq’s unique action ensures he remains firmly in the spotlight — both as a tactical weapon and a subject of debate.
